British progressive pioneers HENRY COW was the leading group of the Rock In Opposition* (R.I.O. for short) movement, initiated by their drummer Chris CUTLER. All members of HENRY COW have been involved in collaborations with Canterbury groups and artists at one point or another, and most of them still are. Their music aged amazingly well over the last 20 years due to diverse influences: some of its roots in the Canterbury school, most notably early SOFT MACHINE, other influences (FRANK ZAPPA, BELA BARTOK, KURT WEIL...). The group functioned more or less as a collective, with a true group identity that changed from album to album as members came and went.

Οι The Sound, μαζί με τους Sad Lovers And Giants είναι από τις πιο υποτιμημένες μπάντες του New/Dark Wave, στις οποίες έχουμε ακουμπήσει ΠΟΛΛΑ λεφτά για τα βινύλια τους. Πολύ καλά έκανες και πόσταρες το Jeopardy, αλλά το απόλυτο αριστούργημα τους είναι το From The Lion's Mouth, με ύμνους όπως τα Winning, Sense of Purpose, Contact the Fact, Fatal Flaw και το πασίγνωστο Possession!!! :wink: Είναι τουλάχιστον αμαρτία να μην ακούσει κάποιος αυτή τη μεγαλειώδη δισκάρα.

Είναι η μπάντα του Dax Riggs γνωστού ίσως από τους φοβερούς μαέστρους του Doom, Acid Bath.
Δυστυχώς οι δεύτεροι δεν έβγαλαν τρίτο δίσκο λόγω του θανάτου ενός μέλους της μπάντας, οπότε και το διέλυσαν.

Όποιος δεν τους γνωρίζει, ας μου πει να ανεβάσω.

Το εν λόγω δισκάκι τώρα είναι πολύ καλό, δεν μοιάζει με Acid Bath, και είναι ένα κόσμημα για χέβι-ψυχεδελο-στοουνεράδες.

Battle of Mice is made up of Julie Christmas (Made Out of Babies), Josh Graham (Red Sparowes), Tony Maimone (Book of Knots, Pere Ubu), and Joel Hamilton (Book of Knots, Players Club); a supergroup, of sorts and, with their respective talents, have made one of the most oppressive and scariest albums I’ve heard in a long time. The majority of the creative edge comes from vocalist Christmas and guitarist Graham who, incidentally, had become involved prior to the band’s inception and had a very bad breakup during the album’s recording. I read an amusing line, in fact, describing Day of Nights as metal’s answer to Richard and Linda Thompson’s Shoot out the Lights which may be an exaggeration, but who knows. In any case, Graham is the music aspect, Christmas is the vocal and, whatever the outcome of their personal lives, they make beautiful music together.

Graham’s guitar performance and production style, like Red Sparowes, sounds pretty much like Neurosis. The complex, atmospheric and, sometimes, painfully slow brand of metal appeals to me more than any other. Neurosis is the king of it, and one of my all time favorite bands, so there is a lot to like in the music, though it doesn’t really break any new ground. What really sets Battle of Mice apart from other acts in the subgenre is Julie Christmas, whose screeches have been impressive in Made out of Babies, who is able to better show off her vocal agility in a more sonically diverse environment than Made out of Babies can afford her. From lilting, theatrical spoken passages to hellspawn, lung-blaring screams to a strangely convincing 911 call, her abilities are profound and, thus far Day of Nights is their her showcase to date. Her wailing, free-associative lyrical style works very well in front of band’s walls of sound and the finished product carries a frightening emotional honesty.

I’d like to think that Battle of Mice will release more than this but, given the relationship issue, I highly doubt it. Though that’s a shame, this is a fantastic debut from a band with the potential to go very far if they could continue to work together.

In February 2003 the UK-based label, Jonathan Whiskey, released a 7” single for the song Concentration Waltz. My Education also has songs featured on the Rollerderby Records compilation The Speed by Which we Fall, and the Clairecords compilation Test Tones Vol. 2.3. After three years of blood, sweat, and tears My Education finally completed their 2nd CD, Italian, which was released on Thirty Ghosts Records on April 26th, 2005. Mr. Fricke soon chimed in with critics all over the world in their admiration of this fine record, which has been described as everything from "...swirling and swaying and leading your ears and your soul into a trippy, calm world, where the sky is glowing a beautiful shade of pink and the sun is always setting on a cold winter's eve" (Joseph Kyle, mundanesounds.com) to "careening around mischievously, like the score to a fictional film" (Chris Elkjar, trust-me.ca) and "slow-cooked noise bombs (that) left everyone in a daze" (Audra Schroeder, Austin Chronicle). Following up Italian is the EP/remix record Moody Dipper. Along with this new record come changes for the band, as Eric decides to leave to pursue his blossoming fine art career (Eric's lovely paintings adorn the covers all four MyEd releases and will likely continue to do so). New bassist Scott Telles of ST 37 fame and vibraphonist Sarah Norris (Benko, Austin New Music Co-Op) join the fold. Accompanying the three new My Education songs on this release are remixes by Dalek, Red Sparowes, Kinski, and Teith (Trevor from Pelican). The CD was released on June 27th 2006 and the band hit the road in July to bring the magic to the kids. On a rare day off in the NYC area, the band had the privilege of recording at Deadverse studios with Dalek, who collaborated with the band on the forthcoming 12 inch release of "Spiegel im Spiegel", an interpretation of a piece by the eastern European composer Arvo Part, which will feature the band's original recording on one side of the disc, and Dalek's radical, extended reworking of the piece on the other, complete with a My Education first, vocals (gasp!) in the form of one of Dalek's trademark abstract verses. Subsequently, the band continues to stay busy with shows opening for the likes of Isis and the Red Sparowes, recording for the upcoming full length followup to Italian, and composing a score for F.W. Murnau's classic 1927 silent film Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, due to premiere at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in March 2007.

Bullet Lavolta was an alternative rock band from Boston, Massachussetts that was originally formed in January 1987 by four college disk jockeys: Clay Tarver (guitar, now of Chavez), Bill Whelan (bass), Corey Loog Brennan (guitar) and Chris "Cruster" Guttmacher (drums). The band later added singer Yukkie Gipe after he responded to an advertisement. They played their first show at a dive bar in Boston called Chet's Last Call to a crowd of about fifteen people, but soon became one of Boston's most popular live acts. They gained most of their notoriety by playing college shows in Boston (usually at either MIT or Harvard, with bigger acts like The Lemonheads, Dag Nasty, and Rollins Band.

Pledging to never play a venue with a stage, singer/guitarist John Reis formed San Diego's Rocket from the Crypt in the summer of 1990 after becoming disillusioned with the hardcore punk band he was in called Pitchfork. Like its predecessor, 2 is based on elements that Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O)))) and Peter Rehberg (Pita) created as a score to the Kindertotenlieder theater piece by Gisele Vienne and Dennis Cooper, but stands on its own as a coherent work.

O'Malley and Rehberg have created another installment of genre crossing experimentation that definitely meets the requirement of "dark." The material shows its pedigree well, with neither artist dominating the other sound-wise: O'Malley's slow motion riffing is augmented nicely with Rehberg's laptop electronics. Opener "Game" and ending piece "Snow 2" bookend the work well, the former being a heavy low-end drone that begins near inaudible and builds greatly in volume and dynamics by the end, while the latter sounds like extremely lo-fi guitar parts recorded deep within a dungeon, mingling with the electronics that end up closing the disc with a film score flair. The sprawling middle tracks differ more widely from each other.

"Theme" begins with a slow, simple kick drum pulse, slathered in reverb as synth tones and loops of what sound like harpsichord begin to build in volume until it dominates the mix like a swarm of angry insects that create the most violent organ tones this side of "Sister Ray." It makes for a dark, bleak, evil variant of psychedelia that's not too distant from the acid influenced electronics of C.C.C.C. "Abattoir," on the other hand, is built more like a Sunn O))) track with all sustained monolith riffs, but in this context it sounds like it is being blasted from a loudspeaker in a deep, dark forest.

Stephen O'Malley has been quoted as saying that the KTL project represents a new form of black metal, and it's a pretty accurate depiction. The material does feature that dark, evil atmosphere, but thankfully without the trappings of cookie monster vocals, corpse paint and battle axes. However, it may be closer, both in sonics and spirit, to the mid 1990s ambient offshoot isolationism, helmed by the likes of Lull, Final, and especially the (sub)genre defining Heresy by Lustmord. 2 is not a work with major crossover appeal, but fans of the black metal scene as well as the experimental electronics scene will enjoy this.

Ethyl Meatplow was a short-lived, yet enormously accomplished, pseudo-industrial alternative/dance-rock outfit comprised of vocalist Carla Bozulich, guitarist Biff Barefoot Sanders, and drummer John Napier. Formed circa 1990, the group released three independent singles before their only album, 1993's Happy Days Sweetheart. The group earned a reputation for their live shows, which combined samples and electronics with live instrumentation. Happy Days Sweetheart earned good reviews in alternative/underground magazines yet the band spilt soon after its release. Bozulich became the vocalist for the pseudo-country-rock group the Geraldine Fibbers.
