Με τη βαθιά γνώση που μεταγγίζει σταγόνα-σταγόνα, νότα-νότα ο κύριος Ζάχος και τις γλυκόπιοτες σκανταλιές και τις παραλλαγές των Κολυμβητών, έχετε εμπρός σας ένα ρόουντ σιντί, ένα βαλκάνιο σύμπακτο δίσκο που μας/σας πηγαίνει βόλτα σε κάθε ξεχασμένη, χωνεμένη κι αφομοιωμένη γωνιά της σύγχρονής μας λαϊκής κουλτούρας.

Γιατί [τολμώ να πω] πως αυτή η ατόφια κατάθεση έχει μέσα της κάτι το αρχετυπικό, κάτι γονιδιακό, κάτι αποκαλυπτικό, κάτι που σε κάνει ν' αντιληφθείς το άπιαστο μεγαλείο, αυτόν τον κόσμο τον μικρομέγα που σε περιέχει και τον περιέχεις.

Και τι δεν περιέχει τούτος δω ο μπαχτσές. Ανατολίτικο κάντρι γουέστερν στο στιλ του Μορικόνε, αναφορά στον Σαγιάτ Νοβά και στην βιογραφική ταινία "Το χρώμα του ροδιού" του Σεργκέι Παραντζάνοφ. Αγιωργήτικο διηγηματικό άσμα στο στιλ των δημωδών, των πανηγυριών και των πλανόδιων ασίκηδων τραγουδιστάδων. Ρεμπέτικο σμυρναίικο από τους στίχους του τσιγγάνου ποιητή Αμπντούλ Χασάν ελ Νουρί που έψαχνε τον προσωπικό του δρόμο προς τη θέωση.

Το έπος του Κιόρογλου Νεστανή που θα πει "ο γιος του τυφλού". Ο Κιόρογλου είναι εν και το αυτό με τον Διγενή Ακρίτα, ισχυρίζονται κάποιοι μελετητές. Μια επαναστατική θεωρία που έγινε πράξη ήτανε και η διακήρυξη των Μαστόρων του Ερντεμπίλ. Οι σαλοί δεν είναι μόνον άγιοι της εκκλησίας. Κι ούτε έχουν μόνο αυτοί στενή σχέση με τη φύση και τα ζώα. Ταξίμι για το κλείσιμο της αλβανικής βεντέτας.

Ελεγεία στον Μάρκο Κράλη που άγιασε ως λαϊκός ήρως, προστάτης των φτωχών, εισηγητής της συναδέλφωσης και της συμφιλίωσης. Σερβικό αντιπολεμικό μοιρολόι με τη βιόλα να στριγκλίζει. Ωδή στο ψάρι που το λεν Κοράν. Ριζίτικα κάλαντα του Κεμάλ του τουρκοκρητικού. Ένα έξοχο δείγμα στην παράδοση των μεικτών πολυγλωσσικών τραγουδιών, μια παραλλαγή στον μύθο της πρωτόπλαστης Εύας. Νεκρικό άσμα, του θάρρους και της επιστροφής. Ψαλμός σε ήχο πλάγιο τρίτο, μονωδία βυζαντινή.

Nαι, δεν ειναι και το καλυτερο του, αλλα εχει μεσα καποια πολυ καλα σημεια. Το πολυ καλο που εχει, ειναι οτι και να μην ξερεις οτι ειναι concept αλμπουμ, σε βαζει μεσα απο μονο του.
Το εντυπωσιακο δε, ειναι ο τυπας, τα χει γραψει ολα μονος του και δεν εχει τον Hoglan στα τυμπανα, αλλα εχει drumkit from hell τα οποια ακουγονται σαν τον χογκλαν.

The opening track, Porous, is a tangled nest of bowed strings and brittle, humming, reverb tones. It functions perfectly as a majestic opener to this sprawling set. Layered guitars surge and ebb, heaving together as one in a glorious drone processional before finally disintegrating and segueing into the sparse, and quite beautiful Lakeside. One thing that has always appealed to me about Wright’s playing is the presence of achingly beautiful, barely-there melodies that so populate his drone canvases. This technique saturates the title track, which blossoms out of the metallic rumblings of Hanging Bottles, and it’s surely a highlight of disc one. Theremin and piano pop up on Late Summer Theremin Action and Some Words for the Dying respectively, adding further diversity to this stunning first disc. Later, the gorgeous, shimmering Tarmac brings about the first chapter of the collection’s fantastic conclusion.
Disc two begins beautifully with chirping birdsong, and soon after, traffic noise and plaintive drones, which effortlessly work their way into the mix. Under Wright’s deft hand these disparate elements cohere organically into a nostalgic, transportive wash of sound. The roar of a jet engine brings about track two, Low Ground, a ringing, mantra-like wall of delayed guitar drones. Another notable mention is The Bride Stripped Bare (Again), which closes the set. From the opening seconds, in which close miked waterfalls intersect with interstellar guitar hums and rumbling static, to the polyphonic chorus of reverbed guitars which mark its ending, it is a stunningly evocative piece of dronework.
The third and final disc in the collection begins with what sounds like field recordings from a street corner – merchants shout, pedestrians converse, and all the while a doleful string drone builds amidst the fascinating, fractured snippets of dialogue. Soon after, a rush of bright, shimmering tones erupts, fusing with Eastern-tinged drones and winsome bass notes before abruptly fading into the brooding vistas of Sierra. Another highlight from disc three is 5 Minutes and 3 seconds, a meditative trek through layers of bowed overtones and cymbal crashes. Pariahs Sing Om is an immense collection of music. It serves perfectly as both a primer and an epoch defining capstone to Wright’s startlingly consistent body of work.

Rowe and Ambarchi pile on wash after wash of drones to propel the sound, while faint radio waves try to break free from the tides. The tension and intensity amongst all the drones builds steadily here, placed against subtle background waves that almost form a sort of pulse that winds its way through the piece. Rowe and Ambarchi come together nicely on this release, complementing each other’s natural instincts and improvisational styles.

It's a real doozy, tripped out and intense from the very beginning. Ambarchi (using guitar and looping devices here) and Berthling (credited only to harmonium) set up layers upon layers of resonating frequencies, drones, oscillations, and thick clusters of sound. On the surface there is very little change or dynamism here. But this kind of improvisation is about anything but surfaces or conventional expectations.

1980s onwards

As a term to describe a musical genre, lo-fi is mainly associated with recordings from the 1980s onwards, when cassette technology such as Tascam's four-track Portastudio became widely available. Prime early exponents included Daniel Johnston, New Zealand bands recorded on Chris Knox's 4-track and released on Flying Nun Records, and Beat Happening and the label K Records. Lo-fi found a wider audience with the success of Beck, Sebadoh, Pavement, Liz Phair, Eric's Trip, and Elliott Smith.

Often lo-fi artists will record on old or poor recording equipment, ostensibly out of financial necessity but also due to the unique aural association such technologies have with "authenticity," an association created in listeners by exposure to years of demo, bootleg, and field recordings, as well as to older pop studio recordings produced more simply. The growth in lo-fi coincided with the growth of extreme slickness and polish associated with the multitrack pop recording techniques of the 1980's.

Many artists associated with the lo-fi movement, such as Bill Callahan, or Bob Log III, have frequently rejected the use of finer recording equipment, trying to keep their sound raw instead, whereas others such as Guided by Voices and The Mountain Goats slowly moved to using professional studios.

In the late summer of 2006 Mammatus returned from a very exciting US tour with their ultimate bros and label mates Residual Echoes. Eager to return to the ocean with which they share a spiritual kinship, they spent the remaining months of summer boogie boarding and finding secret spots along the coast to sit and think in. With the overwhelming majesty of the sea fresh in their minds, Mammatus began slowly tracking another album in their home studio, the Silent Planet. Wishing to explore more complex, dare we say progressive arrangements, the four songs that came out of these sessions left four minds almost completely drained yet excited and fresh. They emerged with “The Coast Explodes,” an homage to God’s mighty ocean, ripe with thick swirling riffs, uptempo sonic freakouts, harmonious soundscapes and even an acoustic guitar and flute campfire jam. A couple of years ago the underground music world was rocked by the re-introduction of one of music's most obvious staples - the humble piano. Suddenly we were greeted by artists recording the ivories and nothing else, letting us hear what this instrument sounded like when alone in a room, unaccompanied by studio over-production and needless gloss. The acoustic guitar is maybe not the most obvious of instruments for a renaissance, but with the aptly titled 'Monologue' Takeshi Nishimoto has done exactly this. This album features just the guitar, nothing else - a microphone in a room and the sound of fingers on strings - with very little eliciting a sound as evocative as you could imagine.
Being classically trained can often be a curse rather than a blessing, but within moments of 'Monologue' you can hear this is a master at work; Nishimoto has that touch that so many attempt and fail, it is effortlessly soft while at the same time furiously focused never drifting into the background or becoming 'light'. His jazz training is evident but this isn't a jazz record, rather Nishimoto lets the melodies take centre-stage and they become lodged in your psyche, revealing more of themselves on each subsequent play. These melodies are steeped in a shy subtlety, unaffected by tricks or typical guitar bravado and it sounds odd to say it but it is strange that you so rarely hear albums brave enough to be so honest with the instrument.
