"When I first started to write the songs for what would be this album, “Dominator”, I was unhappy and disturbed about America’s place in the world. Like most Americans after September 11th, I wanted to see the men that plotted and planned those attacks hunted down like the savage animals they are.

I still do

When the war in Iraq started, it seemed as if that “hunt” would take place and justice would be served. As the war progressed, day after day, it was becoming obvious that we had been sold the greatest pack of lies since the days of Richard “Tricky Dick” Nixon.
These lies continue.
Pete said “I get on my knees and pray, we don’t get fooled again”. Well, we got fooled… again!

I watched the way the US was talking down to other countries. That is to say, addressing smaller, less powerful countries with little to no respect. When I saw the exchange with George W. Bush and Britain’s Tony Blair I was stunned at Bush’s arrogance. We had all seen it before, but telling another world leader, while cameras are filming, to “go down there and tell them I said to knock that shit off” (referring to the Middle East), left my jaw hanging open. Bush using Blair like some sort of “errand boy” and this is America’s greatest ally. So we can only imagine what was going on with the other so called allies.

The more I thought about it, I realized that bigger countries abuse smaller countries similar to the way men do to women. Men abuse women, disrespect them and treat them like shit. Why?… because they can. In effect, a smaller country is treated by a more powerful country just like an abusive man-woman relationship, making them “their bitch”.

Upon first listening, or reading of these lyrics, one might think that it is written from the point of view of a man talking to a woman. In reality, it is a bigger, more powerful country talking to a weaker one. At the same time denying its own people, when the people need them the most.

For me this concept was interesting, but saddening at the same time.

“Dominator” is largely a view of American Imperialism and the “Bully” tactics it uses and enforces.
I hate bullies!

The last six years in America has been an unbelievable ride. After September 11th I was never more proud to be an American. After going to New Orleans and seeing the devastation and abandonment of that great city by its own Federal Government I was never more ashamed to be an American.

The fundamental organizing principle by any Government is its ability to make war against and controlling its own people. We have seen that this American administration uses it not to benefit its own people in their moment of need and despair, but to abuse its power to “Dominate” the lesser countries of the world.

“I’ll make you cry for mercy, I’ll make you cry out loud”

I once wrote “I love my country, but I’m scared to death of its Government”.
Nothing I have ever written is more true!.

το γκρουπ του τύπου που έκαμε τα κουμάντα στο Zach Condon των Beirut (δε θυμάσαι που λέγαμε ότι μαζί του ήταν και ένας από τους Neutral Milk Hotel; Ε, αυτός)



Αυτοί λοιπόν οι τύποι (δλδ ο Barnes μόνος του ουσιαστικά τρέχει την μπάντα αλλά για να ‘χουμε να λέμε, τους θεωρούμε συγκρότημα) κυκλοφόρησαν φέτος τον τρίτο τους δίσκο μέσω της Leaf Label (Triosk, Caribou, Four Tet, Colleen, Efterklang κ.α.). Το “The Way The Wind Blows” λοιπόν συνεχίζει από εκεί που σταμάτησε το Gulag Orkestar, μάλιστα κάνοντας ένα ακόμα βήμα προς την εδώ πλευρά του χάρτη αφού δεν παίζει με κλασικές indie δομές, τουλάχιστον όχι στο βαθμό που τις χρησιμοποιεί ο Condon, αλλά επιχειρεί μια προσέγγιση με εντονότερο το άρωμα της ΑνατολικοΕυρωπαϊκής μουσικής κουλτούρας και νοοτροπίας και που τουλάχιστον στο δικό μου, απαίδευτο αυτί ακούγεται πιο αγνή και αυθεντική.

Αν τα δυο albums ήταν συγγενείς τότε τοThe Way The Wind Blows είναι το "ψαγμένο" ξαδερφάκι του Gulag Orkestar, εκείνο που του δωρίζει δίσκους με λίγο-πολύ άγνωστα ονόματα στο νέο τους κάτοχο και που το παίρνουν από το χέρι για να του γνωρίσουν νέους δρόμους. Όσοι έδειξαν να τους ελκύει η αίσθηση μιας αισιόδοξης παρακμής που ανέδυε σε κάθε ηρωϊκή μα και πένθιμη μελωδία των Beirut καλά θα κάνουν να αφιερώσουν λίγο χρόνο και στο ξαδερφάκι του και δε θα απογοητευθούν.

Καλοπαιγμένο, ευφάνταστο μελωδικό metal όπως το αντιλαμβάνονταν συγκροτήματα σαν τους titan force. To "time lost" είναι πιο δυναμικό, το "transitional forms" πιο "προσεγμένο".

Eleventh, όταν μπορέσεις κάνε την καλή με το πρώτο να τ' ακούσουμε κι εμείς.

Πάρ'τε τα Defyance γιατί τελειώνουν και δεν νομίζω ότι θα είναι εύκολο να τα βρείτε μετά. Αν και απ' ό,τι είδα το Time Lost έχει ήδη εξαντληθεί.

Δεν είναι τπτ φοβερό, αλλά μπορώ να πώ πώς είναι πολύ διασκεδαστικό, ιδιαίτερα οι στίχοι στα ρώσικά είναι μεγάλο bonus πάντως! :)

Λοιπόν! Εδώ έχουμε ένα ντουέτο από την γαλλία (θα ορκιζόμουν ότι είναι από καναδά) που έβγαλε ένα μικρό καλτ post rock, psyfolk, ambient/drone αριστουργηματάκι (self financed cd-r κυκλοφορία να καταλάβετε). Και την ακρίβεια διπλό cd 160 λεπτών (!). Παράξενη lo-fi ηχογράφηση και φοβερή ατμόσφαιρα, ακουστικές κιθάρες, βιολοντσέλα... Οσοι γουστάρατε το Crippled Black Phoenix μη το σκέφτεστε καν, εμένα με έχει εντυπωσιάσει μέχρι τώρα και ούτε καν το μισό δεν έχω ακούσει.

Απολύτως θηλυκό heavy metal, από τη Ρωσία με αγάπη! :D
Δεν είναι τπτ φοβερό, αλλά μπορώ να πώ πώς είναι πολύ διασκεδαστικό, ιδιαίτερα οι στίχοι στα ρώσικά είναι μεγάλο bonus πάντως!

Καλά, στο θέμα γυναικείο metal από την Ανατολική Ευρώπη έχει προλάβει προ πολλού η... Ελένη Πετρουλάκη της Ουγγαρίας (εκτός αν μου διαφεύγει κάτι). Ica Biro λέγεται η μαντάμ και τα τραγούδια του πρώτου της δίσκου τής τα έγραψαν τα τότε μέλη των Pokolgep, τα οποία έπαιξαν φυσικά και τα όργανα - και προφανώς δεν περιορίστηκαν μόνο σ' αυτό. :P

Aρκετά κομματάκια του άλμπουμ γαμάνε (άλλωστε το 7ο είναι το "Indulj" των Pokolgep με αλλαγμένο τίτλο), αλλά η φωνή της γκόμενας έχει γενικά πλάκα. Αν είστε περίεργοι...

το γκρουπ του τύπου που έκαμε τα κουμάντα στο Zach Condon των Beirut (δε θυμάσαι που λέγαμε ότι μαζί του ήταν και ένας από τους Neutral Milk Hotel; Ε, αυτός)



Αυτοί λοιπόν οι τύποι (δλδ ο Barnes μόνος του ουσιαστικά τρέχει την μπάντα αλλά για να ‘χουμε να λέμε, τους θεωρούμε συγκρότημα) κυκλοφόρησαν φέτος τον τρίτο τους δίσκο μέσω της Leaf Label (Triosk, Caribou, Four Tet, Colleen, Efterklang κ.α.). Το “The Way The Wind Blows” λοιπόν συνεχίζει από εκεί που σταμάτησε το Gulag Orkestar, μάλιστα κάνοντας ένα ακόμα βήμα προς την εδώ πλευρά του χάρτη αφού δεν παίζει με κλασικές indie δομές, τουλάχιστον όχι στο βαθμό που τις χρησιμοποιεί ο Condon, αλλά επιχειρεί μια προσέγγιση με εντονότερο το άρωμα της ΑνατολικοΕυρωπαϊκής μουσικής κουλτούρας και νοοτροπίας και που τουλάχιστον στο δικό μου, απαίδευτο αυτί ακούγεται πιο αγνή και αυθεντική.

Αν τα δυο albums ήταν συγγενείς τότε τοThe Way The Wind Blows είναι το "ψαγμένο" ξαδερφάκι του Gulag Orkestar, εκείνο που του δωρίζει δίσκους με λίγο-πολύ άγνωστα ονόματα στο νέο τους κάτοχο και που το παίρνουν από το χέρι για να του γνωρίσουν νέους δρόμους. Όσοι έδειξαν να τους ελκύει η αίσθηση μιας αισιόδοξης παρακμής που ανέδυε σε κάθε ηρωϊκή μα και πένθιμη μελωδία των Beirut καλά θα κάνουν να αφιερώσουν λίγο χρόνο και στο ξαδερφάκι του και δε θα απογοητευθούν.

Λοιπόν, καιρό ήθελα να συστήσω τη συγκεκριμένη μπάντα σε όσους δεν την γνωρίζουν. Ανήκουν στον ευρύτερο stoner rock χώρο κι αυτοί αλλά έχουν τόσο προσωπικό ύφος και είναι τόσο μα τόσο μεγάλη μπάντα που δυσκολεύομαι να τους περιγράψω απλά έτσι. Δυστυχώς έχουν περάσει πολλές ατυχίες με ατυχήματα, ασθένειες κλπ αλλά μετά τη συμμετοχή τους στο περσινό Roadburn (που κυκλοφορεί σε DVD) δείχνουν να επανακάμπτουν κι ανεμένεται σύντομα ο νέος τους δίσκος.

Έχουν και 2 σπλιτ ακόμα καθώς και πολλές συμμετοχές σε tributes & συλλογές. Εγώ ανέβασα τα 2 LP τους, Further (2000) και 13 (2003).
