All hail the rising glory of Arditi! Arditi is a new and rising flame within the martial orchestral music genre. Arditi unites the talents of M. Bjorkman who is widely known for his participation in Puissance and the unlikely collaboration of H. Moller known for his work as the lead singer of the black metal band Algaion. Being familiar with the music of Puissance and Algaion I have to admit that Arditi far surpasses both these bands in terms of musical quality and effectiveness.

Spirit of Sacrifice is Arditi's second full length release. Spirit of Sacrifice follows Arditi's first full length release Marching on to Victory and the bands split album with the eminent Toroidh tilted United in Blood as well as the debut 7” titled Unity of Blood. I have been following Arditi's career since Marching on to Victory and was quite impressed by the collaboration with Toroidh. As impressive as these earlier releases were nothing quite prepares one for the power and glory of Spirit of Sacrifice. Spirit of Sacrifice sees Arditi come to full maturity as the band masters their sound and delivers an uncompromising album of martial anthems.

Arditi has entered the arena of martial orchestral music like a lion amidst the lambs. Producing powerful orchestral music accented by thundering drums and strenuous synths Arditi has harnessed all the emotions, fears, hopes, and losses of armed resistance and war. Following in the tradition of Toroidh, In Slaughter Natives, Sophia, and Der Blutharsch Arditi satisfies our cravings within the post industrial music arena for music that intelligently and artistically explores the phenomena of war and self sacrifice. Many critics think such themes and music should silently endure censorship. I salute Arditi for their courage and persistence in resisting being silenced by fascist left wing censors who strive to control freedom of expression under the guise of protecting the vulnerable music lover.

Spirit of Sacrifice opens with the introductory track “Palingenesis.” “Palingenesis” begins with bombastic drumming that immediately ignites the soul. The drums echo forth from the speakers with incredible definition and depth. A snare drum joins the thundering kettle drums adding dimension and lends a definitive martial tone to the song. Solemn synths contribute a sense of atmosphere that is quite cold and resigned. “Palingenesis” paints a mental picture of soldiers lined up ready to march forth into battle, resigned to their fates, and bound by honor and blood.

“Religion of Blood” is the second track on Spirit of Sacrifice. “Religion of Blood” begins the albums elusive narrative with pounding drums and jarring piano chords backed by the ever present snare drum. Here the music pushes forward from anticipation into action. The music surges forth communicating intimidation that is bound by commitment. The daunting string arrangements add a sense of impending danger as they accent the drumming. A spoken word speech reminiscent of WWII era speakers graces the song. The lyrics explain the dawning of a new age, an age in which the mythos of blood is glorified. The music accumulates into a vision of soldiers nearing the battle lines filled with anxiety and adrenaline. The reality of battle is no longer a concept or an ideal but and impending fate to be embraced.

“Spirit of Sacrifice” is the title song and it reigns in the mood from the forward surging movement of the previous two tracks. Sythns produce an ominous mood that is dark and ethereal. The signature kettle drums pound out a slow deliberate rhythm that leaves the listener suspended between states. A long dictation is recited that calls for a reclaiming of the “iron laurel of our broken will.” The narrative and music instill a sense of looking out upon the devastation of modern culture and finding not merely despair but the desire to set aflame the will to reclaim lost glory.

“Nicht Mehr Schande (No More Dishonor)” Begins with tightly played drums and the sounds of marching boots. The mood immediately shifts from one of reflection into a sense of action. Dark and foreboding the sythns join the marching drums in a rather unique climaxing surge of raw power only to break apart allowing for softer musical elements to dominate. The marching rhythms pull back allowing for a dreamy state of muffled military speech martial ethereal music to be cultivated. But this moment of rest is soon overtaken by the marching drums once more. Part ambient and part martial orchestral ‘Nicht Mehr Schande (No More Dishonor)' artistically evokes the contrast between politics, politicians, and the reality of the men fighting and dying on the frontlines. The politician speaks from a pulpit while the soldier lies bleeding to death in the dirt.

“Our Misfortune” follows with synths, organ, and drums blending in waves of stuttering force. The listener is easily enthralled in a vision of the wounded soldier lying upon his back slowly feeding his life's blood to the cold earth. While the sounds of battle dim around him the darkness encroaches and threatens to eclipse his life. A sense of drifting through memory, history, and life are evoked. Cold and disciplined the music pours forth like fresh blood seeking its final resting place.

“The Measures of our Age” follows in the same icy vein as its predecessors reminding us that glory comes with a high price to be paid. Kettle drums and sythns are now accented by restrained choral elements. Spoken word lyrics are buried deep inside the atmospheric music and are delivered with a very monotone approach. Between vocal recitals the music surges forth attempting to find glory and amidst the doom and destruction painted by the music. Arditi reminds the listener glory is only delivered with the willingness to sacrifice.

“Blood Firmament” begins very slowly and really accents the atmospheric qualities of Arditi. Synths waver in the darkness and drums play a reduced role. “Blood Firmament” seems more a reflection than an obvious statement. Cultivating a sad almost mournful ambience one is reminded once again of the blood sacrifice that war demands. When the guns are silenced and the battlefield is cleared the reality is sobering. For in war we all suffer ultimately either by defeat or by the cost of victory.

“Sieg Durch Zwecksetzung (Victory through Purpose)” begins to awaken the flame from the embers once again. For no matter how much blood is spilled or how many lives are lost war seems the inevitable condition of man. The drums are awakened once more both snare and kettle. War speeches are once again injected into the melee of music as the fire brand words of the power hungry ignite in the people the will to war. Arditi does not glorify this reality. Instead the music remains mournful and reflective. Arditi offers a stark look into the heart of conflict that is unflinching and stern.

“Exeunt” ends Spirit of Sacrifice on a short and solemn note.

The music of Arditi is brilliant and original. Fans of martial orchestral will be hard pressed to find an act that can eclipse the vision of Arditi. It's easy to pound on drums and belch forth lamenting synth tracks. Yet to make such efforts worthwhile and potent one must harness talent and vision. With the release of Spirit of Sacrifice Arditi has claimed their place amidst the ranks of Sophia and Tordoih. Spirit of Sacrifice is a sobering album of martial hymns that is sure to move the heart and soul of even the fiercest critic. If you are looking for music that translates the realities of war and conflict into art and music then you need look no further than Arditi.

I must be lucky because Malahki keeps on sending me fantastic albums to review lately. “The Bright and the Pure” is a full-bodied, entertaining, enjoyable, and intelligent listen. Opening with what sounds like bagpipes, drums, and voices, the listener soon knows they are headed into a ceremonial experience. Alternating the pace between tracks, simplicity in backing instrumentation with complexity, solo male or complimented by a female voice: these are all strong traits which carry throughout this release.

No track outshines any other, nor does any fall short. There is remarkable balance in the adeptness of their execution; equally important is the balance through the songs between male and female voices. At no point did I feel like this was just a harsh male-focused album, nor was it drenched in femininity. Instead it was extremely balanced for my ears.

This album presents an array of examples of why I like neo-folk and neo-classical. From arranging complex background orchestral swellings to simple and pure voice with guitar Dies Natalis presents them all in “The Bright and the Pure.” They have bombastic touches here and there, the all-important militaristic snares, the strings in the background, and so on. Yet at no time do they all themselves to be controlled, labeled, or determined by any of the musical sub-genres; instead, Dies Natalis use the methods and music of these genres to communicate their vision.

Their vision, and my grasp of it, is the only thing I’m a little disappointed in. Nowhere could I find the lyrics; even after a couple dozen listens I can’t make out all the lyrics in English, much less French. It would be so nice if they’d post the lyrics. Then again, I like the album so much that I don’t need the lyrics to enjoy it. However, I am pretty sure they would increase my appreciation even more.

“The Bright and the Pure” is a reliable and consistent ceremonial exploration of emotion and honor. It offers a sense of individual as well as collective sentiments by varying instrumentation from one or two up to multiple voices and backing strings. Environments evoked range from a rural church chapel to green fields that saw the slaughter of honorable men to medieval ceremonies in a dying empire. Do not pass this album up.

Το Exotic Ways το ήθελα κι εγώ, αν και είναι must αγορά ούτως ή άλλως. :D

Lukather θα σ' αρέσει στάνταρ, γερμανική prog metal μπάντα με κορυφαίο Ελληνα τραγουδιστή (Βαγγέλης Μαράνης). O ήχος τους θυμίζει αρκετά Queensryche.

edit: Η ιαπωνική έκδοση του Soul Seasons που πήρα εγώ έχει ένα επιπλέον κομμάτι που είναι εξίσου γαμάτο με τα υπόλοιπα. :D

When an album is produced by the same guy that worked with Isis and Mastodon, it's reasonable to expect a little experimentation. You'll definitely get that, but also a diverse mix of genres and vocal styles. Eyes Of Fire has improved a lot since their previous album.
