Overview:

Five years after releasing both Snuffbox Immanence and Tune In, Turn On, Free Tibet, Ghost returned with Hypnotic Underworld, and there were some changes in the band. Cellist Hiromichi Sakamoto and percussionist Setsuko Furuya (whose marimba gave those albums such a distinct sound) are gone, replaced by a great young rhythm section of Takuyuki Moriya (bass, conta bass, cello) and Junzo Tateiwa (drums, tabla, percussion). Also, Ghost co-founder Taishi Takizawa continues as producer but rejoins the group as a musician as well (he has served only as producer since the mid-'90s). Of course, Masaki Batoh is still here, along with longtime keyboard player Kazuo Ogino and guitar hero Michio Kurihara. With a brief U.S. tour (October 2002) under its belt, the band really jelled, and with Hypnotic Underworld, Ghost have released their most expansive set yet. The four-part title track starts somewhere near the Heliocentric Worlds, with Takizawa's sax playing over the sparest of bass figures and percussion as wisps of electronic ether float in and out. This morphs into a fuzzbass-led groove with great soprano sax that leads into a hard rock movement with a choir adding to Batoh's vocals and an ending so surprising I'll leave it for the listener. This epic track is followed by a glorious cover of Earth & Fire's "Hazy Paradise." The production here is amazing, with harpsichords, Mellotron, and sitar melting into each other and a majestic Kurihara guitar solo at the end. "Kiseichukan Nite" features a very pretty Celtic harp and recorder over a simple bass ostinato and Batoh speaking in Japanese with little washes of electronic treatment creeping in. This album is all over the place stylistically, yet it all sounds like Ghost, even with the electronic treatments and almost prog rock keyboards that hadn't been present on their prior albums. They turn in a version of Syd Barrett's "Dominoes" that is so completely personalized as to be virtually unrecognizable. "Piper" is a rocker featuring some blistering guitar work, and "Ganagmanag" is a classic Ghost-style instrumental trance jam, highlighted by Takizawa's flute and amazing production work. Batoh's vocals have never been stronger, and Ogino's various keyboards add a new dimension to the Ghost sound. Kurihara, as mentioned, is brilliant on electric guitar. The sound achieved by Takizawa and the band is a stunning mixture of ancient acoustic, hard electric, and electronic that Jimmy Page should be envious of. Hypnotic Underworld is a new high-water mark from one of rock's most interesting bands. Highly recommended.

Overview:

Sure, this record really isn't more than an exploitation of the crossover between psychedelic music and Eastern sounds, but that shouldn't detract anyone from listening to it in its entirety; in fact, that would be a huge mistake. The opener, the sitar- and Moog-soaked take on "Jumpin' Jack Flash," is performed perfectly, with every choice accent milked for maximum drama. Once the novelty of sitar-dosed covers of your favorite songs wears off, you really begin to notice how excellent the performances are on this record. Ananda Shankar manages to bridge the gap between kitsch and fine art on these tracks, from the opener all the way to the cover of "Light My Fire." One minute he is playing simple notes like it was taking the place of a guitar, at other times utilizing the full reign of the sitar's sound possibilities. The originals on the album follow an equally impressive path. The dreamy, hazy bliss of tracks like "Snow Flower" and "Mamata" is both meditative and slinky -- light melodies with twisted atmospherics and tweaked Moogs. The drum breaks in the gurgling "Metamorphosis" are worth the price of the album alone. For the most part, the album rarely strays from the East-meets-West formula, with the Eastern rhythms getting the short shrift and the focus relying on Western funk and pop styles getting an Eastern makeover. Not that this is bad at all, but when the track "Sagar" ends, you realize that this record could have been much more than it was. This specific track guides the listener through a space/water odyssey over the course of 13 minutes. It's a slow build that gains momentum as the music progresses and flashes of acoustic guitar help the rhythm along. The final track is a great mixture of folk guitars that takes the focus away from the sitar for once, instead incorporating vocals and a chorus that manages to lock into a repeated chant that is the unexpected highlight of the album.

Overview:

Fahey recorded two entirely different versions of this record: one issued in 1963 and one mostly of re-recordings in 1967. The CD reissue of Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes does Fahey fans a massive favor by combining both versions onto one disc. Preceded only by the super-rare original version of Blind Joe Death, the 1963 LP of Death Chants was the first Fahey album to gain reasonably wide distribution. It's a work that beautifully displays both Fahey's virtuosity on folk and blues guitar and a distinct composing voice that draws much from folk and blues traditions, but is not quite part of either school. Fahey's gift for making music that's tranquil and evocative, but also with enough odd angularity and minor melody to give it depth and ambiguity, is evident right from the start, and heard to best advantage on "When the Springtime Comes Again," "Some Summer Day," and the epic "America." Even on the pieces with more straight blues connections, Fahey achieves a full and reverberant quality that sets it off not just from the average country blues revivalists of the period, but from vintage country blues itself. He takes a journey into the avant-garde with "The Downfall of the Adelphi Rolling Grist Mill," a creepy duet with flute player Nancy McLean. On the re-recorded versions that comprised most of the 1967 version of Death Chants, the fidelity is clearer, and having improved his technique Fahey probably felt more satisfied with these renditions. But as often happens on remakes, it must be said that the originals have an intangibly more affecting, more mysterious quality that does not come through as strongly on the more carefully executed rehauls.

Continuing as their producer, it was Uchida who picked Joe as their new singer. But how should their new band sound? Just as Jimmy Page had vacillated between making Led Zeppelin exclusively heavy and joining the CSN&Y brigade, so Yuya Uchida had grave doubts about the direction in which Flower Travellin’ Band should be seen to be travelling. And so, for their first few months, Flower went off in all directions. First, they recorded the monumental 27-minute guitar’n’atmosphere freakout “I’m Dead”, which transports the listener through every Amon Duul 2 jam session and burns every escape route as you pass along it. “I’m Dead” is a monument of experimentation, of highs and even of lows, yet it was a spectacular success, and – in terms of space and ambience - beyond what even the guitar-based Krautrock bands were later doing.
But this pure freak out music was not for Yuya Uchida, and his next step was to bring in Kuni Kawachi, organist and leader of Flowers’ former rivals The Happenings Four. Kawachi got on well with Joe and Ishima, and they spent the early part of 1970 putting together a series of recordings which were very melodic, but psychedelic and strung out. In places, songs such as ‘The Scientific Investigation’ and ‘Classroom’ echoed the more acoustic later side of the Velvet Underground, . But still Uchida remained unsatisfied, and the project was temporarily abandoned as a Flower album, surfacing later on RCA as the record KIRIKYOGEN

Progressive Thrash out of Colorado and named after JAG PANZER vocalist Harry Conklin’s pseudonym ‘Leviathan’ adopted whilst fronting his side act SATAN’S HOST. Musically LEVIATHAN’s early works are somewhat akin to technical Euro Thrash but as the act’s career moved forward they would tone down considerably. LEVIATHAN was forged during 1989 by former SONIC FURY guitar players Steve Fugate and Ronnie Skeen. Fugate would decamp in 1991, making way for John Lutzow.

The debut 1992 album sees a line up of mainstat guitarists Ronnie Skeen and John Lutzow, vocalist Tom Braden and a rhythm section of bassist James Escobedo and drummer Ty Tammeus. For the sophomore 1994 record ‘Deepest Secrets Beneath’ Braden was usurped by Jack Aragon.

LEVIATHAN switched to the German Century Media concern for 1996’s ‘Riddles, Secrets, Poetry And Outrage’. The band had changed radically both musically and in the personnel department veering into a straight Progressive Rock direction fronted by new singer Jeff Ward. LEVIATHAN had also summoned up a fresh team of bass player Derek Blake and drummer Trevor Heffer...

The sixth of six albums recorded by Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante during 2004, Curtains was initially tracked on the musician's living room floor and subsequently overdubbed with Carla Azar of Autolux on drums, Ken Wylde on upright bass, and Omar Rodriguez of the Mars Volta, who lent his guitar playing to a pair of tracks. Initiated by the stellar, Dylanesque acoustic tones of "The Past Recedes," Curtains opens to reveal evocative, soulful material like "Lever Pulled" and the bright, melodic reflection known as "A Name." God is an Astronaut sounds like a band name that would belong to a three chord garage band from America, rather than a dreamy chill-out lo-fi threepiece from Dublin. It’s not ‘dancey’ enough to be called dance music, and yet while dabbling generously in electronica at times, it offers a much fuller sound than the brittle sparsity and atmospheric minimalism we’ve come to expect from the genre. What we get in return is a much more melodic and immediate record. Title track, The End of the Beginning, weighs in with a swirling ethereal opening before it’s direction is pinned down by throbbing beats and a melodic guitar line.

The stunning Coda is built around a near post-rock guitar motif, while Remembrance follows a similar outline; although this time God is an Astronaut choose piano as the glue to paste their ambient layers together. Point Pleasure is possibly the highlight, changing direction to a fervent interlude midway through which completely alters the track. Route 666 is closer to the more digitised glitchy electronica that’s fashionable at the moment, but it’s still couched in heavy beats and a great rhythm, while closing track Lost Symphony clings to a subtle and brooding bass-line.

At times it echoes The Human League, and once or twice it soaks up the heady dub rush of Massive Attack, and the solar landscapes on the new UNKLE album. Indeed, you get the feeling on some tracks like Point Pleasure and the intro of Fall from the Stars that very serious attention has been paid to the likes of Blue Lines and Protection when writing up their list of creative influences. Intrinsically though, God is an Astronaut sound like something that hasn’t come out of Dublin in a long time, and based on their debut, the city and it’s music fans should be grateful that we don’t have to wait any longer.

Mouth Of The Architect - Time & Withering

Unbelievable madness and majesty! It is hard to believe that this is the full length debut from the cryptically named Mouth of the Architect. If this writer doesn't miss his mark, the band should gain a massive following in the wake of "Time & Withering." Let the name-dropping begin. Neurosis. Isis. Dysrhythmia. Mastodon. Pelican. Mogwai. Explosions in the Sky. Maserati. Ocelot. More could be mentioned here but suffice it to say that fans of several (all?) of these bands will find a lot to like about Mouth of the Architect.

What has been created here is a massively impressive debut record that skirts all kinds of genres better than an AA member avoiding booze at an open bar event. Sludge? Check. Doom? Yep. Hardcore? Uh-huh. Math Metal? You bet. Instrumental? Affirmative. Let me qualify that last point. At times the almost quiet, moody interludes sound like they could be songs unto themselves. Textures are all over this bloody record and the listener would do well to spend lots of time [& withering] with this album.

MotA is kinda like the mighty Mastodon, really, only with longer songs. Overall the crushing and menacing vibe of Neurosis is present in spades, right down to the harsh, shouted vocals. Coupled with that, however, are expansive instrumental passages similar to those of Isis, Pelican, Explosions in the Sky, Maserati, Mogwai, and Ocelot. An occasional jazz-inflected, math riff style presents itself not unlike Dysrhythmia's finer moments, though MotA seems to be less calculating and perhaps more organic.

Bottom line: the music flows back and forth like a blood-soaked tide waiting to drag you against jagged rocks. If the rocks don't kill you, surely piranha below the surface wait to do so. "Time & Withering" displays a certain calmness that is belied by an underlying sense of chaos. Three songs clock in at over 10 minutes each while one is a hair under 5. What are technically 4 songs sound like many more and this album spans a lifetime in its sub-40 minutes. In one hyphenated word? Genre-defying. In one: hypnotic

Justin Broadrick & Kevin Martin met whilst sharing tours with God & Godflesh. Discovering their shared tastes for musical extremes, abusing electronics & having been baptized by anarcho punk, they formed Techno Animal in 1991. As Techno Animal the pair have mutated & fragmented into various experimental side projects (The Sidewinder, Sub Species, White Viper & Eraser), which have periodically mashed up Techno, Jungle, Dub & Hip Hop. But it was by touring with Alec Empire that Curse of the Golden Vampire was born. Having released one album as a trio with Mr.Empire, on the latter's own Digital Hardcore label (that also featured guest appearance from Anti Pop's Beans) in 1998, Broadrick & Martin have now decided to go it alone. 'Mass Destruction' is the result of their mission to fuse the energy of Napalm Death's anarcho thrash with the Amen break attack of No-U-Turn & the incendiary fire of free jazz. Death Jungle, Scum'n'Bass? Call it what you like... this album manages to incorporate every uncompromising element the duo have ever incorporated into their past sonic endeavors, but still manages to capture something totally fresh & relentlessly intense. Drawing on the inspiration of their earliest obsession with Discharge & Crass, Curse Of the Golden Vampire turn up the heat with startling state of the art production techniques & uncompromisingly nihilistic sentiments. As hardcore as music can get, this electrical storm is the pair's most extreme work yet.

Maldoror, was a bit of a surprise. Mike Patton has done solo material in the past. If you are familiar with it you know that it is among the ultimate in bizarre. But this release takes the cake. Teaming up with Masami Akita of Merzbow can only mean that you are about to challenge the threshold of what can legally be referred to as music. For those of you that are unfamiliar with Merzbow, the easiest way to explain Masami's work is to tune your A.M. Radio to nothing but static, turn it up all the way and then put it in your micro-wave. What an amazing sound you have discovered! Yes, this is what Merzbow does, he makes NOISE! Together these gentleman have created a sound effect masterpiece. Obnoxious, cartoonish, loud and totally devoid of harmony. Do not expect something along the lines of Faith No More. And be forewarned this record is not for anyone with a heart condition. So if you are a fan of the truly strange and eccentric, you should not miss this record.

It always happens. Whenever a band achieves commercial and critical success, once they become a respected band that people look up to, there's always one member of said band who decides to head off on his or her own to do a one-off solo project. Even worse, these solo projects turn out to be nothing more than vapid exercises in self-indulgence where, freed from the restraints of the old band and the critical ears of the bandmates, the artist does whatever the heck he wants to do, just because he finally can. Rock 'n' roll music is littered with such pretentious pieces of musical tripe: from John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Two Virgins, to Mick Jagger's She's the Boss, to David Lee Roth's Crazy From the Heat, few artists have been able to step away momentarily from their bands and put together a top-notch solo effort.

System of a Down singer Serj Tankian is the latest to try such a stunt. His band is now regarded as one of the most important and vital metal acts today, one of the only contemporary metal bands who have been able to both take the genre into exciting new directions and achieve commercial success at the same time. Their 2001 album Toxicity was a landmark record for the band, and while we wait to hear whether or not System of a Down can take their music to an even higher level, Tankian has given his fans an album called Serart to experience for the time being.

Serart, though, is not just Tankian alone; he's teamed up with noted Armenian avant-garde artist and multi-instrumentalist Arto Tuncboyaciyan for this little sonic adventure. Hence the obvious title, a contraction of both men's first names. The two met in 2000, and Arto was asked to perform on the outro instrumental at the end if the Toxicity album. Like Mike Patton's work with Mr. Bungle and Tomahawk, Tankian wants to head off in a completely different direction while on his own, and Arto, who has appeared on more than 200 albums, and has worked with such jazz luminaries as Chet Baker and Al DiMeola, is just the man to have at his side. Together, the pair take the casual System of a Down fan on an unsettling, befuddling, strangely appealing journey through world music and electronic beats. There are no Ozzfest anthems where these guys are headed.

The interesting thing about Serart is, it's all spontaneous, recorded in a mere six days, with minimal overdubs, yet it's not always the colossal mess you might expect. The result sounds like someone flipping through various satellite music channels: there are hints of metal, drum and bass, trip hop, spoken word, Armenian, Chinese, African, and South American music, myriad sounds seeming to appear haphazardly throughout the 45-minute CD. "Cinema" starts off sounding like a mix of tabla and drum and bass, with sudden bursts of jazz saxophone and vocal samples, before veering off into a Japanese musical theme for a few bars, then segueing into a metal-goes-tribal sound. "Devil's Wedding" is considerably more focused, with its blend of African rhythms, chanted vocals, and techno beats, while "Black Melon" features both Arto's mesmerizing voice and some whispered poetry by Tankian. The terrific "Leave Melody Counting Fear" utilizes both acoustic guitar and the Chinese string instrument called a guchin, all backed up by a languid trip-hop beat. "Save the Blonde" blends world beat with contemporary electronic music, while "Claustrophobia" is a spoken word performance by Tankian, who is accompanied by Arto on flute.

Easily the most accessible song on the album is "Narina", which sounds like Portishead gone Middle Eastern, as both Arto and guest vocalist Jenna Ross weave a spell on the listener, their voices intertwining over the hypnotic rhythm track. A song like this proves that the album was much more than throwing garbage at a wall and seeing what stuck; underneath the craziness are a handful of songs that are beautifully crafted. Serart isn't a perfect album by any stretch, but it does prove to be more rewarding the more you listen to it, and one can only hope that Tankian can continue to work in some of that same crazed ambition in his regular band, who are on the cusp of greatness. In the meantime, if Serart can show just one hardcore nu-metal fan the vast array of musical styles there are on the planet beyond the crunchy guitars, then the project will have been a successful one.

God is an Astronaut sounds like a band name that would belong to a three chord garage band from America, rather than a dreamy chill-out lo-fi threepiece from Dublin. It’s not ‘dancey’ enough to be called dance music, and yet while dabbling generously in electronica at times, it offers a much fuller sound than the brittle sparsity and atmospheric minimalism we’ve come to expect from the genre. What we get in return is a much more melodic and immediate record. Title track, The End of the Beginning, weighs in with a swirling ethereal opening before it’s direction is pinned down by throbbing beats and a melodic guitar line.

The stunning Coda is built around a near post-rock guitar motif, while Remembrance follows a similar outline; although this time God is an Astronaut choose piano as the glue to paste their ambient layers together. Point Pleasure is possibly the highlight, changing direction to a fervent interlude midway through which completely alters the track. Route 666 is closer to the more digitised glitchy electronica that’s fashionable at the moment, but it’s still couched in heavy beats and a great rhythm, while closing track Lost Symphony clings to a subtle and brooding bass-line.

At times it echoes The Human League, and once or twice it soaks up the heady dub rush of Massive Attack, and the solar landscapes on the new UNKLE album. Indeed, you get the feeling on some tracks like Point Pleasure and the intro of Fall from the Stars that very serious attention has been paid to the likes of Blue Lines and Protection when writing up their list of creative influences. Intrinsically though, God is an Astronaut sound like something that hasn’t come out of Dublin in a long time, and based on their debut, the city and it’s music fans should be grateful that we don’t have to wait any longer.

Once his youthful days spent hanging out in Japan's unique jazz listening cafes in the '70s, Otomo Yoshihide has been a major jazz fanatic, into all its forms from the most traditional standards to freeform energy blowouts. Although his own music has ranged from noisy turntable sound-collage to minimal 'onkyo' drones, no matter how experimental Otomo has gotten his interest in jazz has always been there. His most famous project, Ground Zero, was evidence of this, especially on their classic Plays Standards album. In recent years Otomo formed ONJQ: Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Quintet, teaming up with some of the most talented 'cats' in the Tokyo scene to play jazz both straight and surprising. Tails Out is the Quintet's new album and like their previous releases for Tzadik and DIW it mixes both originals and original takes on other people's songs, starting off very jazz-like with Charlie Haden's "Song For Che" before Otomo's own "Reducing Agent" introduces acid rock guitar into the proceedings. Other cover versions include songs by James Blood Ulmer, Charles Mingus, and the Beatles -- a real nice instrumental "Strawberry Fields Forever"! Some hints of 'onyko' electronics crop up in their Mingus tune and continue into the disc's final Otomo-penned thirteen-minute title track. With beauty, grace, power, and excitement, the ONJQ's love of their source material is obvious and inspired.
