Haha, got to love Valve and their hilarity.

I was on the HL2:CTF beta test team and got to play a practice round with vAlve, but not the actual match (the programmers, artists, and actual devs for the mod played that.)

The mod itself was mostly a CTF mod, and at the time of the match, was very basic (Features have been added since then). It was a CTF match with flags and standard HL2 weapons in multiplayer.

I left the keyboard while observing the match, and when I returned, everything went nuts. Earlier, before we began the match, Valve said we needed to host the match on their servers to insure no cheating by our dev team. They also told the dev team that they wanted to see the source code to make sure there were no special cheats written in before the match. Our dev team agreed and sent them the code and agreed to meet on their server.

It turns out the "we want to make sure no one is cheating" was a ruse. When I returned, I heard Gman's voice saying "Rise and shine Mr. Freeman" and every player's view changed as valve "transformed" into their superhero personas. A title came up giving the Valve employee's name and their alter ego, and they then changed into that alter ego, gaining several powers. One had a rapid fire rocket launcher and infinite health, another turned into a living combine plasma orb and rushed around touching everyone and vaporizing them, the scoreboard went nuts as the points climbed constantly in Valve's favor, even with no flag caps.

What made it even funnier is that Valve only had the mod source code for a day. They even made custom spraypaint logos (really snazzy ones too) for their alter egos. By the end of the match, I couldn't keep from laughing and had a big look of glee on my face. Our dev team thought it was the funniest thing ever and I believe sent Valve a thank you email for the most exciting game of HL2:CTF they had played.
