Ο Χαντσάκερ, ιδρυτής μιας επιχείρησης που ανθεί, αυτοκτονεί χωρίς προφανή λόγο. Το συμβούλιο των μετόχων βάζει στη θέση του έναν αφελή επαρχιώτη ώστε να πέσει η αξία των μετοχών της εταιρείας στο χρηματιστήριο και αυτοί να τις αγοράσουν φτηνά. Όμως ο νεοδιοριζόμενος έχει μια θαυμάσια ιδέα: τη ρόδα του χούλα χουπ. Ένας άνθρωπος-μηδενικό έχει μια ιδέα που μοιάζει επίσης μηδενική, αλλά η οποία γίνεται αιτία να αναστατώσει τα κοινωνικά ήθη της Αμερικής. Η ταινία των αδελφών Κοέν είναι γεμάτη από συμβολισμούς του «0», όπως επίσης και από αντιθέσεις που έχουν να κάνουν με το υψηλό και το χαμηλό. Ταυτόχρονα είναι μια άκρως εντυπωσιακή κινηματογραφική δουλειά: σ' ένα μεγαλειώδες αρχιτεκτονικό ντεκόρ που κάνει τους ανθρώπους να φαίνονται μυρμήγκια, ασημαντότητες (=μηδενικά), οι Κοέν φτιάχνουν έναν εργασιακό κόσμο του παραλόγου που θυμίζει τη «Μητρόπολη» και το «Μπραζίλ».
