Go Ask Alice! and Columbia were not the only places on the "Progesterex" case this week. Many other educators and health care providers around the country received similar messages, were concerned about what they read, and took action to find out whether or not what they were reading and hearing was legitimate. This isn't the first time that seemingly-implausible situations have popped onto the scene, and it no doubt won't be the last; who's rectum will a gerbil find its way into tomorrow? Whose image, sense of security, and peace of mind will be sacrificed next year just for laughs? Yes, the volume of information and the speed at which it can travel 'round the world sometimes makes it more difficult to separate the truth from the crap. Some sound research from reputable resources is a good tool to have along to reach reality.
This current situation certainly seems like a hoax; its creator(s) might be reading this, laughing, and basking in his/her/their fifteen minutes of Internet fame. If so, there are some other things you might try when you next find yourself with some time on your hands: teach disadvantaged kids to read; volunteer at a soup kitchen; raise money for earthquake victims; or, just take a nap.

Thankfully, no. There is no such drug called Progesterex and no known drug that will sterilize horses or any other large mammal (which is what most versions claim this drug was created to do). Various versions have this happening all over the world. The one I saw had it happening in India. The first internet versions were spotting in 1999.
One would have to question why, if such a drug existed, a rapist would go to the time and expense of purchasing and using it. Perhaps a crazed man who hated women and children and wants to make sure that any woman he rapes never has a child again? Your typical rapist would simply not be thinking about babies at all. Rape is a crime of power, aggression and dominance.
Whatever childish fantasy conceived of this idea believes that rapists are identified by the woman having a child by them and needing a paternity test to prove this out. Most rapists are caught because they leave their DNA behind, not in the form of a child, but in their semen. The writer hasn't been keeping up with technology. Even a tiny blot left on an article of clothing can still contain DNA years later.
As Snopes says, "Were a rapist intent upon concealing his identity, a condom would serve him far better than any mythical sterilization drug."

PROGESTEREX has appeared in the public domain again. There is no such product as Progesterex - a drug claimed to be used to sterilise horses, and allegedly used in drug rape cases. If you receive an email referring to it, delete it, as this type of email can be used to transmit computer viruses. This email is pure fiction.
