The concert that Anneke van Giersbergen would give in the Dominicanenkerk in Zwolle on 25 April has been moved from the parish to the Grote Kerk Zwolle, after protests. Already purchased tickets remain valid for the new location.
The performance is part of a number of "Anneke Goes To Church" concerts. Due to the great interest, an extra concert has already been added to the series in Amstelveen and a few hundred tickets have already been sold in Zwolle. After dozens of complaints, however, the Dominican monastery came up with a number of additional conditions that Van Giersbergen had to meet. Thus the singer was faced with the choice: either stay two days and nights in the monastery and share her experiences during the performance, or study three spirituals. Van Giersbergen should also cover her tattoos during the concert.
The singer, who recently made a report for Omroep Brabant about the Holy Triangle in Oosterhout, was open to a visit to the monastery, but the involuntary nature of the additional conditions went too far for her.
Van Giersbergen: “I try to connect people consciously through music. I perform all over the world, including in countries such as Mexico and Greece, where religion plays an even greater role in society and I have never experienced this. Spirituality is important in my life and I am respectful to believers. I have previously sung in consecrated churches and deliberately selected a collection of songs that would be appropriate. I am very sorry that I did not get the benefit of the doubt. "
