Ominous parallels between the rise of Nazi Germany and the United States.
"Those Who Do Not Learn From History Are Doomed To Repeat Its Mistakes" - George Santayana
In the post-war climate of mid-1900s Germany, when national pride was at an all time low, depression rearing its ugly head, and the threat of the foreign but nearby menace of Communism, a nation was united under a charismatic and popular political demagogue named Adolf Hitler. He advocated the rebirth of the strong German national character, uniting the country under a powerful Socialist government, and expansion of the borders of the Fatherland to allow his people their rightful inhabitance of Greater Europe. Soon after a fraudulent election, a terrorist attack perpetrated by the German government, blamed on Communist insurgents, was used as the excuse to invade Poland. This sparked the fires that became the huge conflagration known as World War II, a war so total and enveloping, that it took literally the fires of Hell, the Hell of atomic fires rained down upon the people of Japan, to bring it to a close. Hitler singled out, among others, the cause of suffering and fear in the German people, Judaism. With this enemy emblazoned on slogans and propaganda, a brutal campaign of genocide was committed, the likes of which had never been seen, all of this was with the support of much of the complacent populace, who had been so masterfully fooled into believing the Jews were the nemesis of Deutschland by the Nazi propaganda masters. The main device used by these Nazi spin agents was the all-pervading element of fear. A fearful populace is a populace ready to be united under a common goal. In this case, it was a goal of expansion and extermination. With the mandate of the people, the Fascist power wreaked a swath of destruction and imperialism across Europe. Only after the fledgling world power of the United States stepped into the ring was this totalitarian war machine brought to a grinding halt. In the end, huddled in his bunker in Berlin as the Red Army closed in around him, a broken and diseased Fuhrer took his own life, ending the so-called Thousand Year Reich.
Now fast forward sixty years.
In the post-Gulf War climate of the early 21st century America, when national pride was at an all time low, recession rearing its ugly head, when national pride was at an all time low, and the threat of the foreign but nearby menace of Islamic terrorism, a nation was united under and charismatic and popular son of a former Commander-In-Chief named George W. Bush. He advocated the rebirth of a strong, nonpartisan American national character, uniting the country under a powerful Capitalist government, and expansion of the business interests of the US to allow its people their rightful ownership and control of the overseas oil market. Yet again, a fraudulent election throws the whole way the American body politic chooses its leaders into question, at least for a little while, until the linchpin of the whole situation came into fruition. A terrorist attack, perpetrated supposedly by Islamic insurgents. The President Bush, being an opportunist, seized the moment to launch his character into the annals of history, as the leader who united a nation shook by tragedy. In reality, just like Nazi Germany, this terrorist attack was used as a jump-start for a campaign of conquest and imperial-like expansion in the Middle East. Afghanistan was just the starting point. Again, like the Fascist Third Reich, this is done with the mandate of the people, by brilliant use of propaganda media. The mediums differ with the change of time, but the method remains the same. The method of fear. The long, sinister branch of the government that controls much of the American media has much of the US population seized with fear of another terrorist attack. This goes so far as to be used as the main excuse to invade the country of Iraq, where the world’s largest natural oil deposits are contained. Perhaps you might think that the comparison of George W. Bush, self-proclaimed ‘Compassionate Conservative’ who believes he is doing ‘God’s work’, to Adolf Hitler, who also believed he was doing ‘God’s work’, is a bit unfair. And I might be inclined to agree with you. But look at the similarities. A leader, elected in a very questionable process, grants himself unprecedented ‘Emergency Powers’ for the ‘Emergency Situation’ (USA PATRIOT Act, anyone?), a ‘terrorist’ attack of even greater question and speculation, which is then used to as a convenient excuse to invade a foreign but valuable nation. In the case of Germany, it was the land mass and strategic importance of Poland that was valuable, and in the case of the US, it is the oil contained within the Middle Eastern nations that is valuable. From this point on, things get even more unsettling. Hitler and his Nazi followers then conducted their ‘Final Solution’, a brutal campaign of genocide against the Jews and other undesired elements of the European population. Hitler was obviously a madman, but I do not believe George W. Bush to be insane. I believe he is driven by a simpler, more common goal, the goal of greed. The push to control the rapidly dwindling resource of petroleum may very well spark the fires of the next great war. The treachery of the US government is already being exposed every passing day. It’s how deep this treachery may run that is the most unsettling thing of all. There is still much speculation, though much of it is not publicized and very probably repressed, about the terrorist attacks of September 11th. The prospect that the US government, with most of the Executive Branch made up of powerful magnates of the oil industry, could have had a hand in perpetrating those terrible attacks so that the campaign of conquest of the Persian Gulf region could be jump started from a combination of public fury and fear is a grim and frightening prospect, indeed. But perhaps the most frightening prospect of all is the idea of a third world war. This war will not be fought by Infantry and Wehrmacht, Armored Divisions and Panzer Divisions, Air Force and Luftwaffe, but will punctuated with the use of the deadliest of all menaces, nuclear arms. The battleground of the planet would soon become a wasteland of nuclear holocaust, a grim and barren landscape, scarred forever by the overly ambitious and greedy leaders, and the blind, fat, happy, complacent masses, duped by a curtain of lies, fearmongering, and misrepresentation, that enabled them to rule without regard for anything but their own destructive interests. Just as in the 1930s, when most of Europe was ready to explode into the horrible flames of total war, so is the state of the world, teetering over the abyss of global nuclear holocaust. Just as back then, zealous and ambitious Germany was the catalyst for the war, so too is the United States, poised on the brink of self-destruction. I can only hope that the people of what was once the greatest country in the world can learn from not-so-ancient history, so we are not doomed to repeat it on a greater scale in the not-too-distant future.
