There were all kinds of musical influences around me when I was growing up, I didn’t dismiss any of them as for as playing the violin was concerned, because nobody told me I had to. I was 15 years old when I played for my first wedding; everybody wanted to hear songs by Luther Vandross. In Church they wanted “Amazing Grace.” Girlfriend, I played “Amazing Grace” so much.

I don’t think I ran into any conflicts until I set out to perform with a professional orchestra. That’s when I started noticing that there were certain attitudes about the violin that were very closed: for example, the attitude that the violin was only created to play European classical music and that I was not a serious musician because I didn’t focus on that music exclusively.

As for as I’m concerned, there’s a lot more to this instrument than just European classical music. I don’t have to be stiff with the instrument – I’ve never been stiff in my life! It’s okay to have my own style; It’s okay to move and be expressive; it’s okay to be “Black” about the instrument; it’s okay to be all of that and to be just as enjoyable and just as legitimate as Itzhak Perlman or anybody else. Someone told me recently that she thought that I was the Patti LaBelle of violin. Now tell me that’s not the ultimate compliment!

I require only the freedom to play what I feel from my heart. It will usually come out fine if you just let me express myself. Let me play. I can interpret your music from my point of view.

Karen Briggs’s versatility has been displayed on television sound tracks (Northern Exposure and Thirtysomething), in television showcases (she was a four-time winner on Showtime at the Apollo) and at Carnegie Hall (where she appeared with Dave Grusin).



If you have attended a Yanni concert in the past three years or listened to his most recent albums. Karen is the featured violinist for this world renown New Age Composer. She is featured on such albums like “Yanni, Live At The Acropols, Royal Albert Hall & Tribute”. You would have recognize the distinctive violin solos as the signature sound of the singular Karen Briggs. And while you’ve probably never heard her talk. She has express her deepest emotions to you with the instrument which, in her hands, is more an extension of the soul than a string machine designed to resonate sounds.

Her unique style on the violin is the product of a number of factors including a remarkable family musical history and an introduction to the instrument which encouraged experimentation and exposure to all types of music.

Her father, Frank Briggs Jr., came from a long line of musicians, and is a saxophonist, clarinetist, song writer and singer. His father, the Reverend Frank Briggs Sr. also played the trumpet, piano and organ. In short, Karen represents the current musical genes of more than a century of family heritage.

She was born in Manhattan on August 12, 1963, but soon moved to Portsmouth, Virginia where the galaxy converged on her future. It was in Portsmouth where at the


age of 12, she began playing the violin in public school and came under the tutelage of Jerelene Harding who was recruiting for a string program for students attending public schools in a predominately black community, and would prove to be a major influence on her forever more.

“She was a very dedicated and motivating teacher.” Karen explains. “She allowed us to play all styles of music without any of the restraint that might be encountered in a conservatory-type situation. She never had a problem with my indulgence in music outside of and in addition to that of the classical genre. She stayed with me for the better apart of ten years, even once when I changed schools, she changed the school she taught out of."

Jerelene’s interest in Karen stemmed from the exceptional acumen exhibited by her protege. Who progressed from beginning violin instructor to the advance class, playing second violin in the school orchestra, in the course of a single summer. Within the first year of playing the instrument, she won the position o concert mistress in the school orchestra. Her musical destiny, we now know, was well on its way.

While her musical gifts are obvious to even the most casual observer, she refuses to be immodest. “I’m just me.” She says, “if it’s considered exceptional or a natural gift, it’s been implanted by the people before me. It’s been handed down from my parents and their parents and all the people before me, and I think it’s been improved with each generation.”

Almost taking her gift for granted, she enrolled as a Mass Communication major in college but her heart was never in it because the music would constantly call her back. With true artists, the need to express themselves through performance is as important as breathing.

“Performing is a psychological process all the time,” she says, “You’re always weighing those variables within your mind that influence the way you deliver a performance. For instance, if the music suggests a happiness. I can recall happy events that have taken place in my life, yet, if it’s a piece such as in Yanni’s Nostalga,” which suggests a reminiscence, I’ll often recall thoughts of my mother, how passed away about a month prior to my first tour with Yanni.

In case you’ve every wondered if your reaction, as a member of the audience, has any relation to the performance you experience, Karen assures us that it does. “I’ll give initially,” she says, “and, if the audience gives back. I’ll give more.

“It’s a give and take situation. There’s definitely a significant, but natural connection that is established between the performer and the audience, There’s definitely a correlation between the response of the audience and the performer. Although I will always play my best, there’s another level that is achieved beyond my own self-motivated best, which is determined by the vibrations I’m getting from not only the other band members and my own state of mind, but most of all, the audience. When she’s not on tour, she stays busy creating through her love of the visual arts


from free-hand drawing and tapestry making of design and sewing clothes. Acting as her own business agent, she loves working on the Macintosh book in her next event and keeping track of the books.

Her recording career has taken her to studios where she has been a featured performer for musical albums such as “Yanni Tribute, Live at the Acropolis & Royal Albert Hall albums," and television sound tracks for such well-known productions as “Thirtysomething, Jake and the Fatman.” and Northern Exposure,” and She has also cut her own albums including her latest, “Karen.” Her solo performances have ranged from Harlem’s renowned Apollo theater to New York’s famed Carnegie Hall performing with noted pianist, Dave Gruisin.

Her signature style, the thing that sets her apart from the other player as much as Barbara Streisand’s voice sets her apart from other singers, has been developed through an unequalled variety of performance experiences. “I’m like a jack of several trades,” she says. “I’ve done Afro-Cuban, charanga (an afro-cuban based music of which the violin plays a major role), salsa, calypso, rhythm and blues, jazz, country and western, bluegrass and gospel. I’ve performed with singers and other known musicians, worked in professional symphonic orchestras as a section player. I’ve preformed as a strolling violinist in restaurants and I’ve put together bands for live performances at nightclubs. I’ve done my share of wedding and anniversaries as well. I’ve even performed as a gospel artist. I’ve had a lot of great experience as a violinist and it’s all of these elements that served to make up what goes into what I present to an audience.”



She credits Yanni with seeing the potential of the violin to express new vistas in music. “Violin seems to be going through a whole different era in itself,” she says, “just like the saxophone did, in that more players are coming up who are improvising and wanting to play other styles of music that are not considered ‘traditional’ to the instrument.” And, I think that’s fine. That’s just an evolution for that instrument which is going to have to take place, in spite of opposing traditionalists. My career has spanned more than 17-years, and I’ve always had the sense that there was a good place for my talent. The opportunity to work with Yanni and his concert tours has become a major validation for everything I’ve been doing throughout my career.



“His music gives me room to express myself quite fully in that I’m a soloist, compared to a lot of situations where I would be playing with an orchestra and probably wouldn’t have the kind of liberty. It’s a very non-traditional situation mixed with some tradition. It’s something new and has a uniqueness to it. I’ve been glad to be apart of his phenomenal success.
