[Ghoul]

Monster Magnet are currently working on a DVD release as well as reissues of both Spine of God (1991) and Tab (1992) CDs featuring re-recorded bonus tracks. The band, who are expected to appear at several summer festivals, will begin the songwriting process for the follow-up to 2004`s Monolithic Baby! later in the year. A European "unplugged" tour is also in the works. In addition, Magnet frontman Dave Wyndorf is planning on recording his first-ever solo album.

In other news, ToplessRadio.com has launched and is airing three interview segments with Wyndorf. Also included are "Monolithic" and the uncensored version of "Unbroken (Hotel Baby)" in numerous half-hour music video shows, featured as lead videos.

I'm announcing with deep regret that Phil Caivano, guitarist, singer and my long time friend has decided to "move on" from Monster Magnet.
Phil joined the band in 1998 and has been a solid contributor since day one. No one I know has ever been more dedicated to his craft. He is a unique and talented individual who excels at everything he does and I wish him all the best.

Phil himself will let you know what he's doing in his own good time, but for the record, this is an amicable split.

Needless to say, there is only one Phil Caivano so replacing him is impossible. However Magnet is auditioning guitarists to fill the rhythm slot and I'll let you all know what's up. In the meantime,I'll be playing guitar.This change in line up will in no way effect the output of Monster Magnet, as I am writing the new album now and things are on schedule.

Phil is and will always be welcome as a member of the Monster Magnet family.

On the evening of February 27, Dave Wyndorf suffered a set back in his own fight and was hospitalized due to a drug overdose. His full recovery is expected. We ask that all those he has encountered over the years or simply affected by his music to take a moment to think good thoughts of and for him. Got through the 25 hour drive more or less in one piece. Hotel is actually in the train station, I was lulled awake by the constant metallic screeching of the trains (at least I think it was the trains, hopefully not some dark Erfurt secret). Saw the band Graveyard when we played Getaway Festival on the 7th, great stuff. Heavy blues rock played with bong rattling authenticity by a bunch of longhairs. While I am technically awake, I still haven’t had a coffee yet and I like to mention something that has bugged me for awhile: People who applaud when the their plane lands. Coming back from Greece the majority of the passengers applauded when the pilot made a routine landing. If we landed safely in some kind of storm of biblical proportions or if the wings fell off, then fine, applaud away. It’s his job to land the plane safely. I don’t applaud when I get correct change at the store or if my food is the way I ordered it at a restaurant. It’s in the pilots beat interests not to crash the plane. If the pilot crashed our plane am I supposed to spend my last few moments as a living human being booing him. I also hate assholes who applaud at a movie theater when a movie ends. Who’s hearing you? Is the director or the actors hiding incognito in the theater? You’re cheering an inanimate object. I don’t go to a museum and applaud paintings I like…I really need a fucking coffee

Σε συνέντευξη που έδωσε ο αρχηγός των Monster Magnet, Dave Wyndorf, αναφέρθηκε στις προθέσεις του συγκροτήματος να παίξει live ολόκληρο το "Dopes to Infinity" album στην επερχόμενη περιοδείο του. "Παρακολουθώ καιρό αρκετά συγκροτήματα να μπαίνουν στη λογική των live εκτελέσεων ολόκληρων δίσκων και μου έχει κινήσει το ενδιαφέρον, γιατί αν ήμουν νέος θα σκεφτόμουν ότι αυτό είναι το πιο cool πράγμα που θα μπορούσα να παρακολουθήσω. Μίλησα με κάποιους ανθρώπους που έχουν κάνει αυτή την κίνηση, όπως ο Mark Arm των Mudhoney και ο Josh (Homme) των Queens of the Stone Age, οι οποίοι μου επιβεβαίωσαν ότι είχε πολύ πλάκα και το διασκέδασαν. Έτσι αποφάσισα ότι είναι ώρα και για μας να κάνουμε κάτι τέτοιο". Ο Wyndorf συνεχίζει: "Δεν ήθελα να διαλέξω υποχρεωτικά τον πιο εμπορικό από άποψη πωλήσεων δίσκο μας. Το "Dopes to Infinity" δεν είναι ούτε ο νούμερο ένα σε πωλήσεις δίσκος μας, αλλά ούτε και ο τελευταίος. Θα μπορούσαμε να επιλέξουμε το "Powertrip", ή θα μπορούσα να πάω στα πιο underground album μας όπως το "Spine of God" και το "Superjudge", αλλά θεώρησα ότι το "Dopes..." είναι ένα καλό σημείο εκκίνησης.

I’m happy to announce that Monster Magnet will be performing “Spine of God” in it’s entirety on tour this coming Nov.

“Spine” was our first full length album and a big learning experience for us. What I recall most, though was the subject matter. I was a teenager in the early 70’s and my experiences and impressions of that time had stayed strong within me well into my mid twenties. Like anyone, I would tell stories of my childhood days to new friends and acquaintances but for some reason I could never really relate the almost mystical effect those days had on my adolescent mind.

To me, the late 60’s/early 70’s were colorful, sexy, scary and WEIRD..but like, cool-weird, y’know? Biker movies, Acid Rock, Jim Steranko comics, the first Black Sabbath albums, The Stooges, Hawkwind, black light posters, full frontal nudity, dope culture, muscle cars, the Manson murder trial, Hunter S Thompson ,Tom Wolfe, the Vietnam war and much, much more.

I had some pretty strange adventures back then…hung out with some pretty strange characters as well. 60’s Flower Power was dying, giving way to a hard bitten, burned out new age. Yeah, the psychedelic imagery was still there.. better than ever in fact. The drugs were there too…MORE than ever, in fact. But the bottom line had changed…There was no political agenda with the New Jersey dirt bag-freak crowd I hung out with…no “peace and love”. The whole point of the early 70’s (it seemed to us) was to get as stoned as possible and blow our minds by any means necessary. And that’s what we did.

And I’m damned lucky to have kept my brain.

In the late 80's I began to write songs about my crazy teen-hood..it seemed to be the only way I could even adequately attempt to describe it… and when I joined Monster Magnet those songs became the foundation of the album, “Spine Of God”. It’s a distorted memoir of a time I thought would last forever but in reality was over before I could even understand it.

Played in it’s entirety, “Spine” is a noisy affair..fuzz boxes set on maximum, echo machines and phaze shifters morphing that distortion and carrying the stories of earth bound, Jersey burn-out culture into another dimension altogether. And, hey..if you listen close enough I swear you'll feel the paranoid shivers of that bad acid kicking in.

This is going to be FUN, motherfuckers.. Bring your earplugs!

ε αν μιλάμε για το 4-way diablo είναι γνωστό ότι συνέπεσε με τα πρόβληματα του Wyndorf, για αυτό είναι πιο σκοτεινό από κάθε άποψη
περισσότερο γκαραζιέρικο, παρά heavy και δεν συμμετείχε ιδιαίτερα στην ηχογράφηση, όχι με τον "δικτατορικό" τρόπο που το κανε/κάνει σε όλα τα άλλα

αλλά ας μας τα πει ο ίδιος:


SHOCKHOUND: That balance, between the big rock songs and the garage-y psychedelia, always seems to shift from one Monster Magnet album to the next. But 2007’s 4-Way Diablo, while it has some great moments, came off as kind of a mess. In retrospect, how much of that was due to the drug problems you were dealing with at the time?

WYNDORF: If I were able to do it again, I would’ve written more of the garage stuff; I would’ve taken the big rock songs off the album, and made it all garage. That’s the stuff I was happy with; there were some big rockers that just didn’t sound like they had the energy behind ‘em that they should have. 4-Way Diablo is a really mess because it’s basically pieces of music that, for the most part, I hadn’t used for [2004’s] Monolithic Baby! At that point, we were touring like crazy, and that’s when I got addicted to these pills. I went to a doctor, and I told him, “I can’t sleep — I’m having too much fun being up and I need to go down exactly when I want to go down. I want you to give me something [where] within fifteen minutes I will be down like a wild animal.” He gave me basically the strongest, most fast-acting thing on the market — it’s called Temazepam. I didn’t know it was an anti-anxiety drug until later; I was just like, “Good, give me a downer.” By the time it came to write 4-Way Diablo, my doctor pulled me off the pills because he was under investigation from the DEA — yeah, that guy’s in jail now — and I go into this maddened, fucking crazed state. You don’t want to go off that shit fast. It turns you into a crazy man, it’s worse than heroin. So me being the control freak that I am, instead of telling everyone in the world that I’m completely out of my mind, I’m saying, “Everything’s fine, the record’s coming out!” I couldn’t believe the record actually came out. [Laughs] I never showed up to the studio, so I wasn’t around when this thing was recording; I was in this apartment complex freaking the fuck out! Just madly, quickly, diving into madness. I finally called my girlfriend and asked her, “Please put me on a flight home, I’m going into rehab.” That was my first rehab, ever. I was more afraid of going to rehab than dying of drugs! The boys recorded 4-Way Diablo while I was in rehab. It was my arrangements, my songs, but they recorded that thing themselves. So I came back to finish the record immediately after I started to get my mind back. At that point, that thing was so far removed from me I didn’t know what it was, all I could do is salt and pepper it.

Ο frontman των Monster Magnet, Dave Wyndorf, εξέφρασε τις σκέψεις του για το νέο τους album: “Το “Last Patrol” είναι μια επιστροφή στις ρίζες μας όσον αφορά τα vibes και το στυλ των ηχογραφήσεών μας. Είναι ένα πλήρως psychedelic space-rock με μια αίσθηση 60′s garage, ηχογραφημένο σχεδόν αποκλειστικά με vintage κιθάρες, ενισχυτές και εφέ στην πατρίδα μας, το Red Bank του New Jersey. Τα κομμάτια είναι ένα είδος Space-Noir, ιστορίες κοσμικής εκδίκησης, οξυμένης λίμπιντο, αποξένωσης και επικής παραδοξότητας. 2013 was a big year for Monster Magnet, with the release of their critically acclaimed album ‘Last Patrol’ and first North American tour in a decade. That momentum is carrying into 2014 with the release of the new album ‘Milking the Stars’ on Nov. 18 via Napalm Records.

‘Milking the Stars’ (track listing below) is described as a ‘re-imagined’ version of ‘Last Patrol’ with four new songs and live tracks. The band has released the song ‘No Paradise For Me’ that you can check out in the player below. Frontman Dave Wyndorf calls the song ‘interesting, f–ked up and old school sounding.’

Wyndorf gives more details on ‘Milking the Stars:’ “This was a happy experiment for me. It’s not a re-mix record by the current definition. It’s more like ‘Last Patrol’ in a “what if?” style alternate reality.”

“What if these songs were recorded in 1968?” Wyndorf asks. “What would happen if I turned a pretty song into an angry one?” How would adding creepy organs and Mellotrons affect the emotional vibe of a song?” These are just a few of the questions that roll around in my head when I write and record any album but this time I decided to actually answer them with fully fleshed out, recorded and mixed examples.”

Wyndorf continues, “The process actually created new songs. That’s the icing on the cake for me. New sounds, new vocals, different instruments and arrangements make for a weird 1960′s vibe totally apart from Last Patrol which was fun for Phil, Bob, Garrett, mixer Joe Barresi and myself to explore.”

“Finally there’s expanded versions of the songs “Last Patrol” and “Three Kingfishers” as recorded live at the AB club in Belgium, 2014. Both those songs were re-arranged for “maximum rock and psych” before we hit the road last year and feature the debut performance of new Magnet bassist, Chris Kosnik. Personally, I think they beat the original versions. Rock on!”

Βέβαια, εγώ τα setlists που βρίσκω (από το καλοκαίρι ό,τι τελευταία μπορώ να βρω τεσπα) είναι υπερκλασικά και μέσα στη γκάβλα. Καλά, θα πάω κατά 99% αύριο έτσι κι αλλιώς, αλλά δε βλάπτει να είμαστε και λίγο προετοιμασμένοι.
Βασικά όπως τσεκάρω, παίζει οι δύο ελληνικές να είναι οι πρώτες συναυλίες του φετινού ευρωπαϊκού τουρ; Έκπληξη κιέτσι λοιπόν; Να μας πείτε οι αθηναίοι που θα πάτε απόψε.

Στα φεστιβάλ λόγικο ρε να είναι μικρά τα setlists. Μάλλον τα ίδια που βρήκα εγώ βρήκες κι εσύ. Τεσπα θα πάμε αύριο κι ό,τι γίνει.

Εγω ενα απο Ισπανια που τσεκαρα ηταν κανονικο λαιβ με μια μπαντα σαππορτ... τεσπα, δεν αντιλεγω γιατι ποτε δεν ξερεις, η νεκροψια θα δειξει.

Ηρθαν με τον μπασιστα των Atomic Bitchwax... ιδεα δεν ειχα πως πηγε στους Magnet. Μια ωρα και 40 λεπτα λαιβ, υπεργεματο.

[Grief]

Μουδιασμένος ο κόσμος στη Θεσσαλονίκη, κυρίως λόγω της επιλογής των κομματιών. Αν και δικαιολογώ όσους ξενέρωσαν, από την άλλη το χάρηκα που οι τόσοι και τόσοι άσχετοι που μαζεύονται σε τέτοιες συναυλίες τελευταία, δεν είχαν την ευκαιρία να ακούσουν τα χιτάκια της μπάντας. Γενικά η εμφάνισή τους δεν ήταν κάτι το αξιομνημόνευτο, ακόμα και όταν απευθυνόταν ο Wyndorf στο κοινό, κανείς δε φαινόταν να καταλαβαίνει τι έλεγε!
