MAYHEM LIVE 23/01/05 IN ATHENS
Third time Mayhem show up in the Athenian audience, first time for me though to see them and in addition with Attila's upcoming performance the atmopshere had an aura of Great Expectations, on contrary with the known fact that Mayhem are for some time now a mainly commercial and not an underground band, a fact to be proven unfortunately later in the course of the show. The only thing the greek support band managed to do is to eat up a lot of time and make us lose the trains for the way back, with it's highly gay mix of house/industrial/Mysticum wanabbe/blackmetal (yes, yes!). Anyway, soon the Sylvelster Angfang intro is heard, and than can only mean one thing; Deathcrush! And indeed, Mayhem enter and all hell breaks loose. Attila sings the chorus with two (!) microphones, hellhammer blasts as good as usually, Necrobutcher and Blasphemer create a heavy as hell but discernible musically wall of noise, all seems that the show will turn out to be a great success. To be honest, I found Attila's voice kind of weak for the Deathcrush songs, as he basically tried to imitate Maniac more or less, but all of that is forgotten when the first song from de mysteriis is played; Life Eternal, and yes, the old terror is back! Attila is as good as in the album. After years of abuse of the these songs from Maniac we can listen to the real thing again. The climax is reached with Freezing Moon and immidiatly afterwards...De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas! Yes, I was dreaming to listen to this song live since I was like 15 years old... Any discription I believe is unneedable. The tracklist was mostly consisted of the Chimera tracks, however, and though I was dissapointed I didn't hear more D.M.D.S. songs, the truth is that the Chimera tracks KILLED. Unbelievable grindy constant blasting from Hellhammer, great and precise riffing from the string duo and Attila to be following more or less Maniac's approach to them, although not so monotonous. As a performer also, Attila wipes out easily Maniac. He has a punk-like attitude (he pushed hellhammer's drums throwing down a couple of plates in the horror of the poor roadies and then stage dived in the last song, though it did seem kind of a set-up) , he moves around like crazy all the time, and he has an incredibly morbid voice in which he speaks between the songs (I thought in the start that he used an effects pedal). Anyway after almost 80 minutes of mayhem Mayhem leave the stage for what usually is the standard break of "we go backstage for a piss, you shout Mayhem-Mayhem, we come back and play a couple of songs", with the exception however, here of well, Mayhem never to return from their resting place. Me and a couple of other guys where left to shout alone in the gradually deserted venue and I admit that the last word that occured me to shout was "GAYHEM". What's up with you guys, have yu gone so old and weak that can't manage to come out for a small encore? Ofcourse, if it wasn't of the gayness of the mostly 15 year old audience I'm sure that we would force them to jump off their comfortable couches by making the whole club tremble with our screams, but today wasn't the day it seems. I think that Blasphemer should at least wonder how come that in the previous Aura noir show the situation was MAYHEM, and in the Mayhem well, it was GAYHEM. Maybe it has to do with the own artists artistical and commercial desicions? Anyway it was a great show with some bitter touches; you can't have anything in the end it seems.
