WEIRD AL YANKOVICH – “Poodle Hat”

Oh dear, that weird, AL from the Far north is back. The water in Canada, must have something in it, because the country produces lovely women and awesome musicians. RUSH, PAT BENATAR, EXCITER, RAZOR, ANVIL, HONEYMOON SUITE, CRISSY STEELE, MINDSORM, VOIVOD, I mean the list is endless.And AL! AL is in a league of his own…out of this world.
Al specializes in taking the piss. Corky Comedy rock is his craft, and he’s a master of his art. He parodies, popular songs and he’s the culprit behind such ahem, greats as “Smells like Nirvana”, “Eat it”, “Like a surgeon”, “Amish Paradise”, “Another one rides the bus”, “Fat” and “Pretty fly for a rabbi” to mention but a few. This must well be his 10th album, I mean he has outlived most of the people he has poked fun at. And he returned this year vital and caustic as ever. I was literally rolling on the floor, laughing, trying to get ahold of myself.
1.) Couch Potato – is a parody of "Lose Yourself" by Eminem. Apart from sounding spot on, he criticizes very intelligently the manic tv-brainwashed-viewers that watch, “whatever’s on the telly”. No one get’s spared, from Ann Nicole to Mcgyver, American idol Winners and soap opera stars. They all get the BIG AL, treatment. Awesome.
2.) Hardware Store – I love it. It’s full of percussions that are ahem, industrial, features some cool Queen-like harmonies and multi-voice choruses, as well as a middle section in which AL spits out about 200 in under 30 seconds. Hillarious. About some hardware store that just opened in a town that had...no hardware store. Say what ?!
3.) Trash Day – a parody of "Hot in Heree" by Nelly. About some guy who wouldn't take out the trash so it dominates his home. It’s just hysterical! Gross, but funny, complete with all the rap trademark, yo’s, uh’s and say what’s.
4.) Party at Leper Colony – A weird, orignal tune, title is self explanatory. Wicked.
5.) Angry White Boy Polka - This is so funny, Al does his usual polka number, but this time he takes the catchy choruses from about a dozen of NU-metal-rap songs and puts them together. SOAD, PAPA ROACH, POD, LIMP BITZKIT and RATM are but a few that are ridiculed. Actually this is the only ahem NU song that I ‘ll ever need to hear, from now on, and it’s not even NU. Thank you so much AL, for being considerate, and allowing all of us, closet nu metal loving, old school metal farts, to be bale to listen to Nu, without feeling that we ‘re old or that we betray our roots ! Song of the decade for me !
6.) Wanna B Ur Lovr – 50 or so mozzarella covered, pick-up lines! Nods to SPINAL TAP, gee, it’s like leisure suit larry in a song. I luv this song. I might use a couple of those, like do you believe in love at first sight, or should I pass by again!? If I ‘m just shooting for some unattainable rich bitch with no tities :P
7.) A Complicated Song - Avril Lavigne's "Complicated gets AL’s subtle reworking. Hence he rhymes complicated with constipated, related, decapitated, and mutilated, guess what, talking about bowel movement, incests, and other romantic occasions. All the $$$
8.) Why Does This Always Happen to Me? – A really sick one, this number. It tells about different incidents where people are killed and the “character” in the song, can only think about taping the Simpson’s or a 5 $ debt. There are people like that and it's sick. 120.000 guys died a couple of days ago and only a couple of days later , I heard people saying that it wasn’t THAT bad, since they managed to get things back on track. PHHEW, FUCK YOU and your $$$.
9.) Ode to a Superhero – Ah, Billy Joel’s “piano man” becomes a ballad, that pokes fan at the first spider man movie. Very funny.
10.) Bob – A tribute to the great Bob Dylan. Hm, probably inspired by such fucked up, songs like Bob Dylan’s 115’th dream and such, we get a shit load of rhyming words that make no sense. At least to me. Woo hoo… Even the voice is pretty close. Will bring a smile to the faces of older dudes.
11.) E-Bay – our guy uses a Backstreet Boys tune, to poke fun at people buying useless crap from ebay. As an avid user of Ebay, I was very entertained. Ebay even used it to promote themselves. Smart ! Did I mention that it’s funny. And he can always create paypal as a sequel….
12.) Genius in France – oh boy. This makes Frank Zappa and Cpt Beefheart sound mild and normal, in comparison. 10 minutes, of insanity. The tempo changes every 15 seconds or so ? go figure. Tons of funny effects. It dishes the French, and all the “preconceptions” about them very sarcastically. Smart wordplay and studied innuendo.
I surrender to the genius, of AL, no of France. Uh, that’s AL, eh ! oh whatever !
