SAXON, Gousgounis and fucking heavy metal. Some things seem to be eternal. You, might not “get it”, what I mean in the previous sentence. Well SAXON are a well known metal band from England. Gousgounis is a Cult Greek porn star. Heavy Metal… well if you dunno what it is, then probably you shouldn’t be reading these pages. What I meant by all of the above is that some things never change. This is the case with SAXON. Tthey deliver and rarely disappoint. “Lionheart” is a great metal album, like they used to make them back in the golden glory days of the 80s. “Witchfinder General” starts the proceedings in a stormy fashion, while being dark and doomy as hell. Based on the very well know story of a very good man of the middle ages that would bur torture and mutilate people in the name of Church. One of the best songs that SAXON have written in a while. “Man and machine” follows closely, not such an amazing song as the opener, but still the guitar duels that dominate it are intricate and it has quite a bite. Then onwards to the return, which is a nice little prelude to the “Lionheart”. Title track. A classic! I haven’t heard such a good song from the band since “Crusader”. Nah, that d be a lie. There have been notable songs since, but this one, can look the oldie-goldies straight in the eyes. For some reason too, I think it’s very anthemic and subconsciously Crusader comes to my mind. “Beyond the grave” is more loose, cold, and has a very nice chorus, “Justice” is ok, but didn’t do much for me. Interesting guitar work though. “To live by the sword” that follows, I mean what would you expect ? It’s a heroic “type” of song. Really anthemic and really staccato, with Biffy, shouting out, just as if he was leading a charge in a battlefield. A bit daft, but VERY VERY enjoyable, perfect song to throw your hands about etc etc. “Jack Tars” is a beautiful minute long acoustic interlude about a soldier going to war and segues into “English Man’o’War”. Oh. My god, Joey De Maio eat your heart out. You got pretenders to your throne. Yup,It’s another anthem. And pretty good too. “Searching for Atlantis” could easily have been lifted from “Metalhead” and bears a lot of similarities to “Sea of life” from that album. “Flying on the edge”, that closes the album, is one of those, be proud for being a metal-head styled anthems. Daft, but fun. The album boasts a killer and HEAVY as fuck production and has only a couple weak moments, that are not condemning however, the cover too is a bit boring – but I could not give a flying tosh. The music is what counts and the music on Lionheart, can easily melt yer face. Ah, give it up for those English Lions.
