Kαιρός είναι να αυτο-παρουσιαστούμε κι εμείς λοιπόν... to make a long story short, είμαστε μία παρέα μερικών ατόμων η οποία έχει ξεκινήσει κάποιες μουσικές δραστηριότητες τον τελευταίο καιρό, η σημαντικότερη από τις οποίες είναι η κυκλοφορία δίσκων. Το ένα label (New Age Dawn Productions) ασχολείται γενικότερα με τον μεταλ χώρο, το 2ο (Stellar Auditorium) ασχολείται χμ, με οτιδήποτε άλλο, αλλά με μία ισχυρή τάση προς την πειραματική, ατμοσφαιρική μουσική. Οι πρώτες μας 4 κυκλοφορίες πρόκειται να βγουν σύντομα (μέσα στον Ιούνιο) από το sublabel της Stellar A. Πρόκειται για limited κυκλοφορίες που κυμαίνονται απο 200 εώς και 300 κόπιες. AUD001: Sempervirens - Dirge of the Dying Year

Ο εξ εσθονίας ερχόμενος Margus Mets ασχολείται με τον ambient ήχο όχι τόσο στο συνηθισμένο synth-based, με πολλές μελωδίες κτλ παρακλάδι του, αλλά περισσότερο με την επεξεργασία field recordings και ήχων αρκετά κοντά στις τεχνικές της ηλεκτροακουστικής μουσικής, με σκοπό την δημιουργία "ακουστικών κόσμων", χωρίς όμως να εγκαταλείπει εντελώς και την παρουσία "κανονικής" μουσικής στο έργο του. Το άλμπουμ αυτό είναι το τελευταίο από μία σειρά 6 ακυκλοφόρητων δίσκων (ένα βγαίνει σε cd σύντομα από την Autopsy Kitchen) και πιθανόν και το πιο ώριμο/επιτυχημένο του. Για όποιον έχει εκτιμήσει σχήματα όπως οι Biosphere και Northaunt είμαι σίγουρος ότι θα αποτελεί ένα ενδιαφέρον άκουσμα . 250 κόπιες, jewelcase, artwork από 8 διαφορετικούς graphic artists, όπου ο καθένας έχει δημιουργήσει από μία εικόνα εμπνευσμένη από ένα από τα 8 κομμάτια του άλμπουμ.

AUD002: Procer Veneficus - Saltwater and Glassmoon

Πιστεύω θα έχετε ακουστά τον εν λόγω κύριο μέσω των πολλών και διάφορων ηχογραφήσεων του, που κυμαίνονται ανάμεσα στον ορισμό του Velvet Cacoon/Burzum inspired ambient black metal όσο και των διαφορετικών προσεγγίσεων μιας παρόμοιας αισθητικής, η οποία εκφράζεται από ακουστικά άλμπουμ όπως το Ghostvoices μέχρι την καθαρά ambient υφή άλμπουμ όπως το Saltwater and Glassmoon, το οποίο ακούγεται σαν τους μακρινούς ήχους μιας ορχήστρας βυθισμένης στον πυθμένα ενός ωκεανού. "Deep and slow December ambience; kelp forest orchestral reveries filled to the brim with rich Pacific longing. Midnight moonlight music for crystalline blue air and silver oceanic melodies waning into sleep, slipping softly over the continental shelf into the enveloping refuge of abyssal silence" (ή κάτι τέτοιο). 300 κόπιες, cardboard sleeve packaging.

AUD003: Underjordiska - Dystert Vilse

Black Metal. Κιθάρες - πολλές, πάρα πολλές - κιθάρες που ξύνουν και ξύνουν λες και βγήκανε κατευθείαν από το Nattens Madrigal, πουθενά drums - μόνο ένα αγωνιώδες roll των κυμβάλων στο τέλος μιας φράσης, και βέβαια σκισμένα παραμορφωμένα φωνητικά για το τέλος. Το δεύτερο άλμπουμ του David Dahl/Underjordiska είναι μια πιουρίστικη εκδοχή/εξέλιξη του ύφους του black metal με μία σχεδόν εξω-black metal λογική, και κυρίως με μία ορμή και μανία που παρασέρνει τα πάντα - λέω γω. Είναι black metal, δεν είναι, είναι καλό, δεν είναι, πείτε μου εσείς. 300 κόπιες, digipack, artwork από τον Philippe Saint Laudy και τους υπέροχους τύπους στο Semitone Labs!

AUD004: Underjordiska - Spectral Lore

Concept split album, 1 κομμάτι από την κάθε πλευρά, κάτι παραπάνω από 30 λεπτά. Ένα ταξίδι από την επιφάνεια μέχρι το βάθος της θάλασσας, και πάλι πίσω. Δε σας λέμε περισσότερα! Artwork από τον Benjamin Konig (Trist, Lunar Aurora) και τον Fursy Teyssier (Amesoeurs). 200 κόπιες, jewelcase.

PHIL MAGGI - Lucilla Caesar (5 €, cd-r - Hyperblasted Recordings). Περίεργη ατμόσφαιρα, σαμπλς από κλασική μουσική, μοναχικές νότες στο πιάνο, πειραγμένοι ήχοι. Ωραίο, και σε γαμάτη digipack συσκευασία.

TAIGA REMAINS - Descend from Ivory Cliffs (6 €, 3'' cd-r, Waterscape Records). O Taiga Remains, owner της τρομερής Students of Decay είναι από τους πιο ενδιαφέροντες μουσικούς στον χώρο της ambient/drone. Μία 22λεπτη σύνθεση, από τις καλύτερες που έχω ακούσει ποτέ στο είδος. 1 copy left. http://virb.com/taigaremains

TRUE COLOUR OF BLOOD - The Cave of Knowledge (6 €, 3'' cd-r Waterscape Records) Και άλλο guitar ambient/drone από τον τρομερό και πολύ ποιοτικό τύπο της Waterscape records (μέχρι 50 κόπιες είναι τα τρι-ιντσα που βγάζει, όλα υπέροχα όμως).

WAND.AND PRINCESS - Yellow Ship (5 €, cd-r, Self-Released) Ελληνικό σχήμα, πολύ υποσχόμενο, κινείται στον ambientdrone ήχου με πολλές noise επιρροές. Στο συγκεκριμένο handmade cd-r το noise υλικό περισσότερο δομείται με τη λογική της ambient. http://www.myspace.com/wandandprincess

THE MAGIC TRAVELLING BACKPACK BAND - s/t (7€, Cd-r Foxglove) Φιλανδικές σαμανικές ψυχεδελο-φολκ τελετουργίες. Για οπαδούς Silvester Anfang/Funeral Folk και δε συμμαζεύεται.

THE NORTH SEA - Mud Dragons (7€, Cd-r, Foxglove) Η Digitalis/Foxglove του κύριου Brad Rose είναι μάλλον είναι ο σημαντικότερος εκπρόσωπος του νεο-ψυχεδελικού/lo-fi folk κινήματος βγάζοντας ταυτόχρονα και τρομερά πράγματα στον γενικότερο χώρο της πειραματικής μουσικής. Αντιστοίχως και στο προσωπικό του σχήμα, κινείται ανάμεσα στον folk και στον ηλεκτρονικό ήχο, και το συγκεκριμένο cd-r είναι ένα σκοτεινό τριπάκι σε ambient/noise χώρους, αποτελώντας την τελευταία κυκλοφορία της limited σειράς της digitalis, foxglove.

BARN OWL - s/t (7€, Cd-r Foxglove). Ακουστική φολκ με τις ψυχεδελικές και drone, όσο και post rock επιρροές της. Μη φανταστείτε κουλαμάrες, οι τύποι παίζουν πολύ σωστά θυμίζοντας πχ και κιθαρίστες στην φάση του Jack Rose, μέχρι και Natural Snow Buildings, και γενικά είναι φοβεροί. 1 copy left. http://www.myspace.com/barnowlband

Οοphoi: Από τους σημαντικότερους και παλιότερους εκπρόσωπους του space dark ambient/drone ήχου, ο ιταλός είναι μαστερ στο να δημιουργεί σκοτεινά και εξωγήινα ηχοτόπια βασιζόμενα αποκλειστικά στα αναλογικά συνθεσάιζερ, κυκλοφορώντας ένα μεγάλο αριθμό άλμπουμ κυρίως από την εταιρεία του Umbra Records. I will. Έχουν έρθει και πολλά άλλα πράγματα τελευταία, άντε να βρω χρόνο να τα γράψω!Έχω μια κόπια special edition του The Cold Gloaming με κόνσεπτ Σεπτεμβρίου (μέσα είχε αποξηραμένα φύλλα, χώμα, ποιήματα, σουγιάδες (!) etc κάτι άλλο δε ξέρω όμως, χαχ.

Αρχίζουμε λοιπόν με μερικά απο αυτά που έχουν έρθει τελευταία:


GATHIENS - NESH (6€, Murkhouse Recordings, Cd-r)

Οι Gathiens είναι αμερικάνοι, κάτι πιτσιρικάδες στα είκοσι τους, ο ένας από τους οποίους έχει την ιδιαίτερα υποσχόμενη εταιρία Murkhouse (τσεκάρετε εδώ (http://www.myspace.com/murkhouserecordings)). Σ' αυτό τον πρώτο δίσκο τους λοιπόν παίζουν το instrumental είδος του post rock, όχι τόσο με τον κλασικό Explosions τρόπο αλλά με πιο ευρείες, ίσως πιο prog, επιρροές. Αυτή η έκδοση του δίσκου σε cd-r είναι "pre-release" στις 40 μόνο κόπιες (νάτες όλες από κάτω) μιας και ο δίσκος θα βγει κανονικά σε cd από την εταιρεία τους.

Colossus / Yellow Crystal Star (6€, Heavy Nature Tapes, Cd-r)
Colossus / Robe. False Harbors (4 €, Tape, Barbarian Tapes)

Οι Colossus είναι ο ryan paul laliberty, ένας μουσικός μέλος της αμερικάνικης drone/free noise/ψυχεδελικής σκηνής ο οποίος κάνει limited/DIY παραγωγές μέσω του "home-made" label του Heavy Nature Tapes. Αυτά τα δύο σπλιτ με αντίστοιχα πρότζεκτ στην ίδια φάση περιέχουν οργανική, μελωδική, drone μουσική η οποία όταν αγριέυει φτάνει στα όρια του noise. Οι δύο κυκλοφορίες αυτές έχουν εξαντληθεί ήδη, έχουμε μόνο μία κόπια στο σπλιτ με Robe.

SEAN REARDON - A Collection of Origins (7€, Cd-r, Waterscape Records,)

Άλλη μία πολύ καλή κυκλοφορία από την Waterspace, αυτός είναι ο πρώτος δίσκος του Sean Readron, ο οποίος κινείται στο χώρο της μίνιμαλ ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής, με έναν ήχο που μπορεί να περιγραφεί τόσο με τον όρο "glitch" όσο και "ambient" δημιουργώντας ηχοτόπια που δεν υπάρχει περίπτωση να καταλάβετε ότι δημιουργώνται κυρίως από μία κιθάρα.

Βlack Bile - Cloakal Meditation (6€, Cd-r, Self Financed)

Εδώ έχουμε υπερκάλτ κατάσταση. Αυτή είναι μία μπάντα τριών Κυπρίων οι οποίοι κυκλοφόρησαν αυτό το μοναδικό demo τους το 2006 σε 100 μόνο κόπιες και έπειτα (από τι έχω καταλάβει) διαλύσαν. Μιλάμε για κατάμαυρο Funeral Blackened Doom Metal, ένα κομμάτι 30 λεπτών που ακούγεται λες και έχει ηχογραφηθεί σε κατακόμβες ("Sewer Doom" λένε τον ήχο τους οι ίδιοι) το οποίο πηγαίνει από σάπια αργά σημεία σε ανατριχιαστικά ritual/ambient πεδία. 3 τελευταίες κόπιες που υπάρχουν μάλλον. Μιας και δεν φαίνεται να υπάρχει σαμπλ ονλάιν, ανέβασα λίγο από την αρχή.

ΒLOOD OF THE BLACK OWL - Blood of the Black Owl (8€, CD, Bindrune Recordings)

O Chet W. Scott είναι γνωστός από τα πρότζεκτ του Ruhr Hunter, The Elemental Chrysalis αλλά και την καταπληκτική Glass Throat Recordings, μια από τις πιο ενδιαφέρουσες εταιρείες στον γενικότερο χώρο της σαμανικής ψυχεδέλειας, (!) αν υπάρχει τέτοια πράγμα. Αυτό εδώ είναι το πιο ιδιαίτερο από τα πρότζεκτ του, Black/Doom/Folk ενίοτε καταστροφικό, Celtic Frost-ικό και επιβλητικό, ενίοτε "πνευματικό". Αυτός εδώ είναι ο πρώτος δίσκος του και ο πιο metal.

NEFARIOUS - DIABOLORUM (8€, 7'' EP, Kunsthall)

ARC - Arkhangelsk (8€, CD, Epidemie Records) - Arc is the live improvising band of Aidan Baker and two other Canadian musicians. Their sound is based on the guitar drone elements, familiar to those acquainted with A. Baker's vast discography, mixed with percussion and other instruments like woodwinds, recalling the ethno-tribal ambient sound explored by musicians such as Klaus Wiese and Alio Die.

GODHEADSCOPE - A city out of Sight (8€, CD, God is Myth Records) - Godheadscope is Matt Rosin, possibly known to some for his wonderful singing and collaborations with the country/black metal beasts Dead Raven Choir and Wolfmangler. In his personal project, he drifts in a song-oriented form of ambient/drone music, serene and esoteric but not without harsh edges, hinting at a backround in industrial/noise music. Vocals and conventional instrumentation like piano and acoustic guitars are also used, giving to this album a stronger melodic sense comparing to typical records of the genre.

NEW RISEN THRONE / CRUEL HARVEST - Shadows over Humanity (7€, CD, God is Myth Records) - A split between two dark ambient projects, the pretty well known now from the Cyclic Law releases New Risen Throne, and the debut of the US project Cruel Harvest. NRT excels at the CMI-style of dark ambient, painting dismal and desolate soundscapes, while the Cruel Harvest side suprisingly shows a more ethereal and melodic approach sometimes, inbetween all the moments of darkness.

MILTON CROSS - Light in the West (8€, CD, Digitalis recordings) - Milton Cross is more well known from his main band, the post rock experimentalists Tarentel. His first personal recording has been self-released in small quantities, now re-issued by the wonderful Digitalis Industries remastered, with new tracks added, and old and defunct stripped away. Milton is a classical trained violonist and harmonium player, and as expected, these instruments take the lead in his multi-layered from a variety of sources and instruments, for the most part acoustic, sound. Droning, melodic, and nostalgic music.

TWINSISTERMOON - Levels and Crossings (9€, CD, Digitalis recordings) - The duet behind the amazing post rock/psychedelic folk band Natural Snow Buildings, Mehdi Ameziane and Solange Gularte is also pursuing solo recordings as well, Mehdi going by the name Twinsistermoon and Solange by Isengrind. Levels and Crossings is the second release of Twinsistermoon, and it among the best recordings ever to come out from the duet. Pastoral folk music, psychedelic atmospheres that end up in mind boggling crescendos, rituals from some undiscovered ancient civilization, rememberances of a distant post rock past. All using a wide array of acoustic and ethnic instruments, and maybe for the first time with a clear and powerful sound to accomodate the music. The packaging is adorned with wonderful hand-made artwork by Solange. Get a copy while they last.

WOLFMANGLER - Cooking with Wolves (7€, CD, Digitalis recordings) - Dead Raven Choir's Smolken is a man that questions the hegemony of guitars in music; with his main project, he distorts the contra-bass to preposterous ends in an attempt to seize the black metal audience with covers of country music, 19th century poetry and winnie the pooh references. Wolfmanger is a band though, a band of three basses (what would you think?) playing "acoustic doom" music. The first part of the album is composed by Smolken alone, after his return to Poland, while the second part features the original Wolfmangler line-up, wider instrumentation and vocals by Matt Rosin.

MATHIAS GRASSOW & BRUNO SANFILIPPO - Ambessence (piano & drones) (7€, CD, ad21music) - Bruno Sanfilippo and Mathias Grassow are two experienced and well-known artists in the area of modern atmospheric music, having released both a startling number of recordings which may be classified under the labels of ambient, drone or new age music. Sanfilippo plays piano in this release, and Grassow makes electronic treatments in the background, and the result is contemplative, deep music whose obvious references are the Eno and Budd collaborations.

MATHIAS GRASSOW & JIRI MAZANEK - Inner Path (8€, CD, Nextera) - Yet another one of the many collaborations of the, always busy it seems, Mathias Grassow. Jiri Mazanek is a Czech musician, influenced from Indian music and philosophy, who's performing meditative music for over than 25 years, solo or with various ensembles. This album is based on the zither instrument and overtone singing performed by Mazanek, while Grassow augments the effect of the acoustic instruments or places deep drones underneath, the result being one of the finest representatives of the "ethno-ambient" sound.

Το artwork (και το Echoes of a Long Dead and Forgotten Place) στο SL - I ειναι πολυ του γουστου μου !

Τελικα p8888ογγε, o κινεζος εκανε δουλεια δεν ειναι παπαρας. Το Veineliis/Kaeltetod ειχε βγει πριν 2-3-τοσα χρονια σε LP πετσοκομμενο + full μουφα ηχο , αυτο εδω ειναι πολυ καλυτερο και με ολοκληρα τα κομματια.

Εαν ερθει τελικα το Leere απο την γαμωTaiwan -- μια χαρα.

This Troum album originally appeared as part of the Mystery Sea limited cd-r releases, now it is made available again in cd format by Faria Records. Two long, over 30 minute compositions featuring Troum's known style of organic drone music, this time centered more on its abstract and darker/noisier aspects, bringing into mind the Maeror Tri days. The conceptual backround of the album is based on at attempt to (re)create pre-symbolic music, that is, music that adresses the subconscious state of mind, the remnant of the ancient past of emotion and intuition.

Troum is the duet of Martin Gitschel & Stefan Knappe, a pioneering band in the front of drone music. Being unique comparing to the majority of the musicians in the said genre by using exclusively analogue equipment and no computers or synths, Troum have been putting out excellent material since 1998, after the broke up of their previous band as a trio, Maeror Tri. Ryna is their first album, re-issued in 2006 by Transgredient Records and one of their finest offerings up to now. Celestial, melodic, sometimes harsh, sometimes rhythmical and in other times liquid and abstract, but always transcendental, music. Highly recommended.

Jasper TX - Black Sleep (CD, 10 e.)

Jasper Tx is a moniker for Dag Rosenqvist, a swedish experimental musician who has made quite an impression lately with releases in labels such as Kning Disk, Slaapwel and of course this album in Erik Skodvin's wonderful post-classical Miasmah records. The basis for his sound lies in a guitar-driven droning ambience, often adorned with field recordings and processed material of various origin. What differentiates however Jasper's work in comparison to other composers of the rigid avant-garde or electroacoustic genres, is an affinity for melody and an appreciation for "conventional" pop aesthetics. For example, he'll often pause using the guitar as a source material for sounds to jam out an emotional and enveloping melody in an acoustic breakdown (such as in third track of this album) not unlike post-rock bands such as Explosions in the sky or Mogwai. In "Black Sleep" however, we are presented with some of Dag's darkest material to date. Brooding, low key, almost seducing drones coupled with melancholic guitar chords on top, crackling from some old vinyl, white noise and old machinery, black ambience waning into forgetfulness. Greg Haines - Slumber Tides (CD, 10 e.)

Minimalism and classical music are the two obvious references for the work of Greg Haines. This Uk-based young composer is recording himself playing various string or other acoustic instruments (with the addition of Jasper Tx on pump organ and a female operatic singer) and applying them to electro-acoustic treatments, creating walls of sound reminiscent of droning music, or sequencing slow passages that fade into silence, in the aesthetic of the "holy minimalism" school of Part and Taverner. It comes without saying that, like most Miasmah releases, excellence is guaranteed.

Epic metal! Sig: Ar: Tyr: is the norse-influenced musical outlet of an experienced 34-year old musician going by the name of "Daemonskald" and features an amalgam of two approaches to the fore-mentioned genre: the "modern" pagan metal of agressive riffing, folk interludes and black metal rasps, and the old-school heavy metal approach of clean singing, slow rhythms and extensive soloing. The result is a brilliant record that will certainly make some invincible swords to be raised to the sky. Fans of Bathory, Primordial and Manowar might do well to check this out.

Falls of Rauros - Hail Wind and Hewn Oak (CD, 9 e.)

Falls of Rauros are certainly one of the most promising bands in the US metal scene at the moment, and this is their first properly released album after two demos that have easily gained the attention of the underground. Owning musical influences to bands such as Agalloch, old Opeth and describing their music as "North Appalachian Heathen Black Folk Metal" F.o.R. are part of the spiritual, naturalist and primitivist revival that happens in the US black metal movement with bands such as Wolves in the Throne Room, Velnias, Fauna and the rest of the Cascadian hordes. Focusing attention mostly in melody, clarity and atmosphere rather than brutality (useful to mention that they insist in self-recording their albums, eschwing the plastic overprocessed sound of modern metal) and often even departing into (post)rock-ish or acoustic territory, Falls offer a stunning debut of soulful and original music we'd like to hear more often.

Amazingly harsh and punishing black metal, with a sound so buzzing and overpeaked that references to Ulver's "Nattens Madrigal" and various Ildjarn recordings. Fortunately there's also content besides the agression, good riffs and a dark, warmongering atmosphere.

Excellent Hungarian atmospheric black metal, drenched in majestic forest ambience. Sorrowful and powerful at the same time, aided by an analogue natural sounding production and encompassing elements such as acoustic folk breakdowns, field recordings and ambient interludes in order to complete its palette for the depiction of a sunset in a cold, ancient woodland. Recommended.

Pure Audio Terror.. Stalaggh is probably some of the scariest "music" you'll come to hear in your entire life; or at least the sickest and most distressing. Combined of equal parts death industrial/noise and frenetic tortured screaming (supposedly by asylum inmates recorded by the band itself, ok don't count on it, but it sounds damn close) this album, which is a re-release of both "Project Terror" and "Project Nihil" full lengths together with remastered sound, promises to shatter your reasoning and emotional stability into pieces, considering, of course, for some strange reason known to only hardcore followers of this kind of demented art, that you're up for it.

Γιο, κι όμως υπάρχουμε και έχουμε καινούργια πράγματα μετά από πολύ πολύ καιρό.. το 2ο άλμπουμ των αμερικανών Fauna "The Hunt" βγαίνει τον επόμενο μήνα σε συνεργασία με την Aurora Borealis, αλλά θα έχουμε και άλλα νέα με τις αρχές του 2010.

Fauna isn't really a normal Black Metal band, or a rock band, or a music band in the greater sense. In a world where everything's moving forward at the fastest pace, there are some people that feel disconnected with the contemporary culture of materialism, individualism, apathy and discord. Confronted with the complexities and dead ends of progress and modern society, it is not at all uncommon for artists and visionaires to seek for inspiration in previous periods of our history and evolution as human species, as the fascination with the archaic found in metal or neo-folk music clearly states. To transform this inclination into a livable philosophy however, is an entirely different thing. Fauna have crossed that threshold, up to the point where their music serves primarily as an outlet for their spiritualism, and as an instrument to affect the world and the living beings that inhabit it. The role that the two members of Fauna, Echtra and Vines, undertake, is similar to that of the ancient shaman; one that communicates between the physical and the spirit world. As the shaman engages the community through cathartic rituals of exctasy, so does Fauna in their live performances, which usually take place in secluded spots within natural environments and utilize elements of both musical and ritualistic performance, having been described as "having a life of their own" by parts of the audience. The ideal expressed by Fauna is one of symbiosis with the natural world, one of immersion into a mythic reality of eternal return similar to that of ancient tribes, and one of of rejection and opposition towards modern civilization. The ultimate goal lies in the liberation of the human psyche from modern constrains and in its reconnection with a transcendental and spiritual outlook. We are extremely pleased to help in disseminating these very important documents in the form of compact discs, and hope that this collaboration will continue to bear fruits in the future.

Robert Rich - Somnium

There's certainly no need to introduce Robert Rich himself, but Somnium should be rightly declared as one of the best achievements of the composer and obviously, the ambient genre itself. A recording that spans 7 whole hours, Somnium is at attempt by Robert Rich to recreate his "Sleep Concerts" that made him famous in the 80's, where the composer would perform long hour sets and attenders would come bringing their pillows with them at the show, falling asleep during the set. The desired effect is to induce hypnagogic images and unique states of consciousness to the listener/dreamer, rather than curing insomnia, as perhaps a more new-agish frame of mind would lead you to assume. The music itself, presented on a DVD with continuous playing between the parts, is as wonderful to experience asleep of awake, and perhaps even more in the latter state, which is a good indication of why this is a brilliant record.

Jeff Pearce - The Light Beyond

Jeff Pearce is in, perhaps, contrast to the majority of musicians in the ambient genre, a instrumentalist first and foremost, dedicated to his instruments of choice, guitar in the past, and more recently the chapman stick. The music that he makes is often though, as cloudy and abstract as you can imagine. This acclaimed recording in his catalogue, is in fact a live one: he has performed this set at the renowed space music radio station, Star's End radio, in 2000. You'll find hard to believe the wealth and span of sounds that Pearce can get out of a single guitar. Amorphous, floating soundscapes of a distant, aethereal beauty, culminated in his 43-min epic, A Farther Shore.

Numina - Sanctuary of Dreams

One of the leading projects in modern synth-based ambience, Numina's debut for Hypnos is already a classic in the genre. All sounds used for this album have been manipulated to the point of perfectance, and the mood that prevails during the course of the album is one of dark and serene melancholy, sometimes getting close to the borders of dark ambient, and in other times continuing the more abstract sides of Steve Roach's music. All in all, a real masterpiece and a great entry piece for newcomers into ambient music.

M. Griffin - Fabrications

This latest output by Hypnos founder, Mike Griffin, has been actually in the works since 1997, and its release had been constantly delayed until finally seeing the light of day in 2008. Fabrications is a work of epic proportions; an amagalm of various field recordings mostly based on urban environments, mixed and processed up to the point of creating a loud roar of dark and surrealist soundscapes, like a "Zoviet France soundtrack to a David Lynch film" according to the artists' own words. Not at all unlike "ours" Margus Mets' Sempervirens in other words, this work places Mike Griffin in the category of most daring sculptors of sound, and we await his next step with great interest.

Matt Borghi - December Impressions

"Subtle" is indeed a successful word to describe the form of ambient composer and sound sculptor, Matt Borghi's, music. December Impressions is a 2001 recording recently reissued on the Hypnos' Secret Sound imprint, and it is an effort by the composer to represent audially the harsh winters of Michigan's landscape. Cold and distant drones, flowing from each track to another, giving the impression of a long-form composition. Hauntingly beautiful.

Sans Serif - Tones for La Monte

Forrest Fang is more well known for his collaborations with musicians of the magnitude of Robert Rich, and for solo releases in labels such as Projekt, rather for this moniker which he used to create an ambient tribute to the primordial minimalist composer and pioneer of drone music, La Monte Young. "Tones for La Monte" is characterized by the sustained, droning tones one would expect from such an undertaking, combined with sweeping, floating synths that recall Steve Roach's brand of ambient music. The result is, in fact, never aimless or stationary, but highly dynamic, warm and organic. An excellent, undiscovered gem of ambient music.

Deepspace is Mirko Ruckels from Australia. He has been mostly releasing his music for free in digital format until now, acquiring a faithful audience and getting several awards as a newcomer to the ambient scene. His music is based on synths, melodic and serene pads for the most part that lead up to epic climaxes, other times with an otherwordly -as says the name- and gritty edge, with the corresponding sci-fi themes.

Vidna Obmana - Opera for Four Fusion Works: Act 4

2007. The fourth and final installment in vidnaObmana's ambitious "Opera For Four Fusion Works" project. Each "act" of this project involves vidnaObmana's reworking and recycling audio sources from different collaborators. Act I used guitar pieces from Dreams in Exile, Act II used Bill Fox's saxophone recordings, Act III worked from the foundation of Kenneth Kirschner's piano works, and this last installment utilizes the voice of Steven Wilson ( No-Man, Porcupine Tree, and the artist behind Bass Communion). Even those who are thinking "I don't like voice with my ambient music" will really love this. It's one of the most unusual and yet relevant recordings ever released by Hypnos, in which a very recognizable sound, the human voice, is progressively transformed from the familiar, into stranger and more "ambient" atmospheres. It's captivating & beautiful.
