Το 2004, όταν είχε πρωτοβγεί ο δίσκος από μικρότερο label, ένα από τα καλύτερα παιδιά του Μόνολιθ είχε γράψει τα εξής:


Metridium Field is the debut full-lenghter of this Sacramento outfit and while not strictly monolithian fodder, this album covers all bases in such an immaculate way that it would be a crying shame if it went down unnoticed. Indeed, this strangely named band enters the foray of sonic exploration armed with a piece that demands and grabs attention in such a compelling fashion that, if there is any justice left, should make a lot of heads turn in awe. Head still aches. Soul is naked.

Giant Squid are proficiently mixing seemingly disparate parts in a truly unique manner and are equipped with a clear sense of dynamics that despite all the experimentation present in abundance, the focus remarkably never strays out of the path of fluent song writing. From the outstanding opener proper Neonate the genius shines through. Offering eastern guitar melodies on a bed of hypnotic drone hooks and a spaced out feeling of angst and deprivation; the whole experience is eerie and unsettling. An outlandish psychedelic funeral doom aquatic cavern, veiling thoughts and memories long forgotten in the mystic crevices of the unfathomable ceiling, slowly dissipating in agonising pain to the vast unknowns of the oceanic mind. Everything is lost. And everything is gained.

The production courtesy of Bill Anderson in its low key manner doesn’t serve the music as much as the moody sonic undertows and the evocative soul shattering soloing serve his work. The excellent vocals, both male and female, fill the space in between. Fans of Ufomammut, Neurosis, Pleasure Forever and The Swans should be elated. Self calling fans of music should better listen.
