Jones recorded the original version of "Tainted Love" which was a 1982 hit for Soft Cell.

Jones was the girlfriend of Marc Bolan and, in 1974, she joined his group T. Rex. In 1977, shortly after they had a child together Marc Bolan and Gloria Jones were in a car accident. Bolan was killed and Jones was seriously injured. Their son, Rolan Bolan, is now a rock musician.

It was the next Soft Cell effort, 1981's "Tainted Love," that brought the duo to international prominence; written by the Four Preps' Ed Cobb and already a cult favorite thanks to Gloria Jones' soulful reading, the song was reinvented as a hypnotic electronic dirge which became the year's best-selling British single, as well as a major hit abroad.
