Clooney to Remake Bolivian President Doc

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) -- George Clooney may direct and star in a feature remake of the acclaimed political documentary "Our Brand is Crisis," interpreting the story of a reviled former Bolivian president as a dark political satire, according to industry reports.

The entertainment magazine Variety reported this week that Warner Bros. had acquired the rights to remake the behind-the-scenes look at the role of U.S. political consultants in the 2002 election campaign of Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada. Warner Bros. is a unit of Time Warner Inc.

The project will be handled by Clooney's production company Smoke House, and could likely see the Oscar-winner starring and directing, Variety reported.

The original documentary, directed by Rachel Boynton, records the success of U.S. political guru James Carville and others in selling an unpopular candidate to Bolivian voters through American-style campaign marketing. Sanchez de Lozada won the election, but was forced to flee the country less than a year into his first term after ordering a crackdown on October 2003 violent street protests that killed some 60 people.
