Όχι τόσο διαφορετικό από ένα θέμα που νομίζω είχε ανοίξει ο αγαπητός σας moderator Kveldssanger.

Λοιπόν ακούστε πως έχουν τα πράγματα. Σήμερα ήπια μερικά ξύδια και μιας και δεν είχα τίποτα καλύτερα να κάνω, θυμήθηκα το ευεργετικό εκείνο thread, με τις διάφορες εκτελέσεις παλιών κλασικών (ή και όχι) τραγουδιών.

"I Fought the Law" is a much-covered song originally recorded by Sonny Curtis of The Crickets. The song is more identified in the eyes (and ears) of many music fans with the Bobby Fuller Four, who recorded a more successful version of the song in 1965, and with The Clash, who recorded a punk rock version in 1978.

Just as the song became a top ten hit, Bobby Fuller was found dead in a parked automobile near his Los Angeles home. The police considered the death an apparent suicide; however, many people still believe Fuller was murdered.

It was the existence of a 45 of the Bobby Fuller version in a studio jukebox that inspired The Clash to record a cover version of the song in 1978. Their version first appeared on the EP Cost Of Living in May 1979 in England, and then later in 1979 was made part of the American edition of the Clash's eponymous album. This cover version helped gain the Clash their first taste of airplay in the States and is probably the most well-known cover version of the song, not counting Fuller's.

The song has also been performed, either in concert or on record, by Bryan Adams, Green Day (which was used in the 2004 iTunes Super Bowl advertisement), John Cougar Mellencamp, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Social Distortion, Mike Ness, Hank Williams Jr, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, The Grateful Dead, Stray Cats, La Mano Negra, and numerous other artists. For the 2003 film, Intermission, Colin Farrell recorded a version of the song, singing it in the guise of his character in the film.

The Dead Kennedys, in particular, wrote and recorded a different version as a comment on Dan White's 1978 murder of San Francisco mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk, and White's subsequent use of the "Twinkie Defense" to influence the court to convict him of the lesser charge of manslaughter. The song, sung from the perspective of White and replacing the line "I fought the law and the law won" with "I fought the law and I won," contains the following lines:

In 1989, when the U.S. Marines had Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega confined to a a church and were attempting to flush him out, one psychological tactic they used was to play "I Fought the Law" loudly and repeatedly from loudspeakers. When presidential press secretary Marlin Fitzwater was asked about the appropriateness of this at a press conference, he replied to the effect that it was a refreshing illustration of Americans' sense of humor.

The Bobby Fuller Four version of this song is ranked #175 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The original song starts out with the big-voiced Hawkins singing a ballad to a lost love. Very quickly, however, the performance becomes something unique: Hawkins seems positively demented as he sings, he threatens wildly, screams, grunts and groans, and sounds utterly demonical in reclaiming the lady as his own.

Hawkins had originally intended to record "I Put a Spell on You" as a refined love song, a blues ballad. He reported, however, that the producer "brought in ribs and chicken and got everybody drunk, and we came out with this weird version. I don't even remember making the record. Before, I was just a normal blues singer. I was just Jay Hawkins. It all sort of just fell in place. I found out I could do more destroying a song and screaming it to death."

Some sources claim that "I Put a Spell on You" had been released earlier than 1956 in a more sedate form, but this has not been verified. The date of 1949 for an original release on the Grand label would appear unlikely, since it predates both the formation of the record label and the beginning of Hawkins's performing career.

"I Put a Spell on You" became a quick success, despite being banned by some stores and radio stations. A softer version minus certain sounds deemed "cannibalistic" reached the Top 40 and brought Hawkins together with Alan Freed and his "Rock and Roll Review".

Up to this time, Hawkins had been a blues performer, emotional, but not wild. Freed suggested a gimmick to capitalize on the "demented" sound of "I Put a Spell on You": Hawkins wore a long cape, and appeared onstage by rising out of a coffin in the midst of smoke and fog.

The act was a sensation, later bolstered by tusks worn in Hawkins' nose, on-stage snakes and fireworks, and a cigarette-smoking skull named "Henry".

The original song starts out with the big-voiced Hawkins singing a ballad to a lost love. Very quickly, however, the performance becomes something unique: Hawkins seems positively demented as he sings, he threatens wildly, screams, grunts and groans, and sounds utterly demonical in reclaiming the lady as his own.

Hawkins had originally intended to record "I Put a Spell on You" as a refined love song, a blues ballad. He reported, however, that the producer "brought in ribs and chicken and got everybody drunk, and we came out with this weird version. I don't even remember making the record. Before, I was just a normal blues singer. I was just Jay Hawkins. It all sort of just fell in place. I found out I could do more destroying a song and screaming it to death."

Some sources claim that "I Put a Spell on You" had been released earlier than 1956 in a more sedate form, but this has not been verified. The date of 1949 for an original release on the Grand label would appear unlikely, since it predates both the formation of the record label and the beginning of Hawkins's performing career.

"I Put a Spell on You" became a quick success, despite being banned by some stores and radio stations. A softer version minus certain sounds deemed "cannibalistic" reached the Top 40 and brought Hawkins together with Alan Freed and his "Rock and Roll Review".

Up to this time, Hawkins had been a blues performer, emotional, but not wild. Freed suggested a gimmick to capitalize on the "demented" sound of "I Put a Spell on You": Hawkins wore a long cape, and appeared onstage by rising out of a coffin in the midst of smoke and fog.

The act was a sensation, later bolstered by tusks worn in Hawkins' nose, on-stage snakes and fireworks, and a cigarette-smoking skull named "Henry".

"Which Side Are You On?" was a song written by Florence Reece in 1932. She was the wife of a labor organizer for the National Miner's Union in Harlan County, Kentucky. In 1932 the miners of that region were locked in a bitter and violent struggle with the mine owners. In an attempt to intimidate the Reece family, deputies hired by the mining company illegally entered and searched the Reece family home. Sam Reece had been warned in advance and escaped, but Florence and their children were terrorized in his place. That night, after the men had gone, Florence wrote the lyrics to "Which Side Are You On?" on a calendar that hung in the kitchen of her home. She took the melody from a traditional Baptist hymn.

"Nature Boy" is a song by eden ahbez, published in 1947. The song tells a fantasy of a "strange enchanted boy... who wandered very far" only to learn that "the greatest thing... was just to love and be loved in return".
The Yiddish songwriter Herman Yablakoff alleged that the melody to "Nature Boy" came from his song "Sveig Mein Härtz" ("Be Still My Heart").
The melody of "Nature Boy" can be clearly heard in multiple passages from Antonín Dvořák's "Piano Quintet No. 2 in A, Opus 81" (1887).
The content of the song is based on a 1940s Los Angeles-based group called "Nature Boys," of which ahbez himself was a member.

όχι, θα συμβεί, προέκυψε και άλλο ένα, θα συμβούν και τα δυό.

Τις προάλλες έστειλα στον Kingdom Gone ένα τραγούδι του Cliff Richard. Που το διασκεύασε (εξαιρετικά) προσφάτως και ο Momus, οπότε δε θα μπορούσα παρά να χαρώ για την ύπαρξη του τραγουδιού. Μαρέσει ο Cliff Richard. Εκείνος, ο Kingdom Gone, όχι ο Cliff, σε μια ψυχεδελική έκρηξη κακογουστιάς, απάντησε πως τέτοια τραγούδια θα τα ακούγαμε στα σοβαρά άμα ήμασταν πενηντάρηδες, και επιπροσθέτως πενηντάρηδες που είχαμε γεννηθεί το 40'-50'. Με αποθάρρυνε (προς στιγμήν) βίαια από το αγαπημένο μου hobby, να ψάχνω όλες τις εκτελέσεις μερικών αγαπημένων μου κομματιών. Ήμουν (και θα ξαναείμαι) στη μέση της αναζήτησης όλων των εκτελέσεων του παραδοσιακού αμερικάνικου "The Streets of Laredo", που από το στόμα του Johnny Cash έγινε κάτι Μεγάλο. Και στις δύο εκτελέσεις του, στο "Johnny Cash sings the Ballads of the True West", όσο και στο "American IV: The Man Comes Around", με διαφορετικούς στίχους. Το παράτησα στη μέση, διότι δεν υπάρχει ανταγωνισμός. Σα να προσπαθήσει κάποιος να ξαναπεί το "Hurt". Κανένα νόημα. Οπότε αποφάσισα να βρω κομμάτια που δεν έχει πει ο Cash. Ξεκίνησα να ψάχνω το "Amazing Grace", αλλά η ποσότητα είναι χαοτική, και η στάθμη της ποιότητας δεν με ενθουσιάζει. Μετά ανακάλυψα πως το χει πει και ο Cash.

Το ταμαγκόθι πριν κάποιο καιρό (και κάποιες σελίδες) είχε ποστάρει το "Amsterdam" του Brel, αν και είχε ξεχάσει την εκτέλεση του Scott Walker, γεγονός για το οποίο σταμάτησα να της μιλάω.

Εδώ έχουμε ένα άλλο τραγούδι του Jacques Brel, το οποίο έχει πει ο μισός πλανήτης ανά καιρούς. Σε θεματική υφή, θα μπορούσε να ακολουθεί ένα "Ces Gens La".

Trivia : Δεν επιλέχτηκαν όλες οι υπάρχουσες εκτελέσεις, διότι αυτό θα ήταν σχετικά βαρετό. Διάλεξα όσες θεωρώ πραγματικά μεγάλες. Πέραν του original (που δε βρίσκεται στην πρώτη ηχογράφησή του εδώ), θεωρώ πως ο Scott Walker και η Βίκυ Λέανδρος (άλλωστε ο ίδιος ο Brel της είχε ζητήσει να το τραγουδήσει) έκαναν πράγματα έξω από τη φαντασία, πάνω σε ιδέες άλλου. Όπου το δείτε με διαφορετικό τίτλο (Marlene Dietrich, Momus, Neil Diamond) είναι επειδή πάνω στην έννοια της διασκευής, οι καλλιτέχνες επιμελήθηκαν τη δική τους μετάφραση. Ο Momus στάθηκε γενικώς κοντά στο πρωτότυπο, αλλά ο Walker έγραψε καλύτερους στίχους. H Marlene είναι η Marlene, δεν έχω κάτι να πω. O Tom Jones έχει συγκλονιστική φωνή. Το τραγούδι είναι ακόμα πιο συγκλονιστικό.

Ήθελα να το βάλω μόνο στο blog, αλλά θυμήθηκα πως αυτό είναι μάλλον το αγαπημένο μου er thread.

Το Sinnerman το ξέρουμε όλοι (?) κυρίως από αυτή εδώ την εκτέλεση της Nina Simone που -ομολογουμένως- είναι και η κορυφαία του, τελειότητα σε νότες, σε στίχο, τα πάντα, μην τα ξαναλέμε.

Το άσμα όμως είναι λέει παλαιό παραδοσιακό και ψαχουλεύοντας βρήκα κάμποσες εκτελέσεις του που αξίζουνε μια παρουσίαση.
Αρχής γενομένης (για τυπικούς λόγους κυρίως) από την παλιότερη ηχογράφησή του, από το 1956:

Στη συνέχεια το έπιασε η Σιμόν και του έδωσε την απόλυτη μορφή του το 1965 περίπου, και έκτοτε υπάρχουν πολλές άλλες εκδοχές. Ήδη από τα τέλη της δεκαετίας του '60 οι Pete Tosh και Wailers (το σχήμα του Bob Marley) είχαν ηχογραφήσει κάμποσες διασκευές του είτε ως Sinner man είτε ως Downpressor ή Opressor Man αλλάζοντας ελαφρώς τους στίχους, και φέρνοντας το άσμα και στη reggae κουλτούρα.

Από κει και πέρα, αγνοώντας τις -πραγματικά- άπειρες και ψιλο-αδιάφορες επανεκτελέσεις από τα 60ς και δώθε, και ψάχνοντας για το διαφορετικό, ή τέλως πάντων κάτι που θα σε κάνει να σηκώσεις φρύδι, φτάνουμε στην υπέροχη (τους πάει γάντι έτσι κι αλλιώς) εκτέλεση των 16 Horsepower τo 2002.
