Γεια σας, ήμαστε οι Echidna από Θεσσαλονίκη, έχουμε κάτι λιγότερο από 1 χρόνο ύπαρξης και παίζουμε κάτι σαν thrash/death. Ολοκληρώσαμε τις ηχογραφήσεις του 1ου μας ντέμου το οποίο θα αποτελείται από 4 κομμάτια. Μέχρι να οργανωθούμε, να βγάλουμε εξώφυλλα και να οργανώσουμε και το site μπορείτε να ακούσετε τα 3 από τα 4 κομμάτια (σύντομα και το 4ο) από τη σελίδα μας στο myspace:

Παιδιά τα τραγούδια γαμάνε. Είναι Α-Ψ-Ο-Γ-Α σε όλους τους τομείς. Από τα φωνητικά που βρωμάνε Petrozza (το οποίο είναι πολύ καλό), την παραγωγή, τις συνθέσεις... τέσπα γενικά γαμάνε. Ωραίες μελωδίες, σωστά τοποθετημένες το κυριότερο, σόλα :headbang2: , άρτιο παίξιμο. Τελειώνετε γρήγορα με τα εξώφυλλα, θέλουμε ντέμο τώρα :hungry:

Bασικά το fact ήταν μια παλιά ηχογράφηση ψιλο-ότινάναι! Δε θα το βάλουμε στο demo γιατί πιστεύουμε ότι θα ρίξει το επίπεδο από πλευράς ήχου :P (έχει χρονικά λάθη στη μίξη πέρα από την κατώτερη παραγωγή!).
Το λογότυπο ακόμα το δουλεύουμε αν και σε κάτι τέτοιο θα καταλήξουμε μάλλον (δε θέλουμε κάτι extreme). Θα δούμε τι μπορούμε να κάνουμε να το "αγριέψουμε" λίγο! :)

Thanks παιδια!!!! Να στε καλα, ευχαριστουμε για ολα τα σχολια!!

Ανεβασαμε το Downforce στο garagaband.com (οπου το καθε τραγουδι γινεται review απο 20 τουλαχιστον ατομα και γενικως εχει ενα πολυπλοκο συστημα, οποιος ενδιαφερεται μπορει να τσεκαρει το site!), στον 1ο γυρο πηρε 5/5 και θα ειναι "Track of the Day" στις 28 Απριλιου ενω κερδισε βραβεια εβδομαδας για καλυτερο μπασσο και καλυτερο ρυθμο στη metal. Ακολουθει βεβαια και ο 2ος γυρος (εφοσον περασει!)
Ανεβασαμε και το Balance Preservation και εντος μιας βδομαδας πιστευουμε να εχουμε και τα πρωτα αποτελεσματα απο εκει!

Νέα από garageband: Το Downforce δεν πέρασε στο 2ο γύρο τερματίζοντας στην θέση 1756 από 8072 τραγούδια (βαθμολογία 3,5/5) αλλά το Balance Preservation είναι τώρα στο 2ο γύρο ενώ θα είναι επίσης track of the day στις 8 Μαίου και στον 1ο γύρο πήρε βραβεία εβδομάδας για καλύτερες κιθάρες, μελωδία και πρωτοτυπία στη metal και καλύτερα ντραμς και μπάσσο overall. :)

Echidna is a band you need to know about. This goes out to fans, other reviewers, major metal labels, fanzines, all of you. To my knowledge (and yes I did some fucking research) this 5-piece is unsigned for the moment, but if I was running a label, I’d be snapping my ankles running to sign them. I wouldn’t say the music on This Suffering demo is stunningly original, but holy fuck is it cool, and when executed with such a vibrant stance, Echidna make classic ideas sound somewhat fresh in a way.

With a harsh vocal attack slightly similar to that of Darren Travis, Rob Dukes, and latter-day Chuck Schuldiner, along with a roundabout musical likeness to the old-school of Bay Area thrash, Echidna throw down four pieces of mature, immaculately performed riff-frenzied metal which not only has a hell of a loud bark, but a nasty bite as well as a grip that doesn’t let go. I wanted to listen to this all day, the flow and structure of the material here is addictive as hell. Even though Echidna reach into reserves of the most ballistic Exodus, Nuclear Assault, and (drum-wise) Fear Factory influence, the band establishes their own individual identity throughout each of these four songs. The musicianship is not only superb, but also seething with personality and gumption, unafraid to take the initiative and throw in something a little exotic and subtle into the crunchfest.

The smooth Middle-Eastern flow of “Balance Preservation” brought back memories of Artillery’s criminally overlooked By Inheritance album, most notably when the minimal yet sophisticated lead work kicks in around the 2:40 mark, and returns briefly to close the track hauntingly. Beautiful stuff. The balance of this demo is perfect, the production sounds professional as hell, the guitar tones, the vocal patterns, all of it is prime choice macaroni. Give me a fork so I can dig in, because the depth and substance of the material presented here for consumption is too good to pass up without wanting to overindulge. None of the songs are too extravagant even when the tempo and riffs change up, and I get a strong sense that the band spent a good amount of time in formulating these ideas and perfecting the patterns into something very easy on the ears without dumbing-down, or saturating the process.

Echidna need to be exposed to a wider audience, because I get the same feeling from this demo as I got the first time I heard Heathen and couldn’t figure out why they weren’t huge. Any smart label wouldn’t make the mistake of passing these guys by if this demo drops on their desk. This Suffering is riveting thrash metal of the classiest order, and if I’m not listening to their debut album from Century Media, Nuclear Blast, The End or another respectable label within a year’s time, I’d be very, very surprised, and disappointed. I want to hear more, and I want you to hear it as well. Someone needs to sign them and get this show on the road.

Echidna (the She-Viper of the greek mythology) is a young band from Thessaloniki and ...This Suffering is their first demo. It was released in 2006 and contains four songs. The band´s style is something between modern Thrash and Death Metal with some additional melodies. The songwriting is well-thought-out, features a lot of variety and many solos. There is also a certain feeling of progressive Death Metal sometimes, so the members surely can convince with their technical abilities. Singer Theo is not growling, but has an own kind of screaming, sounding aggressive and unique at the same time. The demo starts powerfully with Downforce. Highlight of the demo is Balance Preservation, which got some kind of oriental melody, fitting perfectly to the aggressive music. Depleted sounds like a fist in the stomach, thankfully due to the strong sound of this demo. Last song is the title track, which starts calmly with a nice solo, but then expoldes within a second. Let me mention the chorus of the song, together with the last solo it makes the song even better! Echidna released a really strong demo, none of these four songs has any weak point. I hope that a label will recognise soon the potency of ...This Suffering, ´cause Echidna´s music should be known to many metal heads worldwide!

The first notes of “Downforce” track stroke me enough with that death/thrash style obviously influenced by Death. The other tracks left me with mixed impressions. Guitar solos and some oriental riffs are too casual and they should focus on that in order to improve in the composition section. The bass guitar fills are very nice and good work has done in vocals too. The production is very good and there is a good atmosphere especially in some acoustic moments. On the whole it is a good release but there is space for improvement.

Before I start presenting this band I want to clear one thing out... One of the guitarists' name is Nick Parastatidis, however, we are not talking about my brother, who is also an editor in Behind The Veil webzine. I mention this because I don't want anyone to think that my review is favorable, clement or gentle for this reason. In fact and although we live in the same city, I haven't ever met any of these guys. So, now that this part is clear I think we can proceed with the presentation of this demo CD. This quintent counts less than 2 years of existence, however, they've managed to present a great outcome that won't make you at any point think this is a demo work. It's highly professional and I was amazed to see a band with so little experience to release such a quality and professional work! Starting from the music and moving on to the production, musicianship and artwork, everything is superb and reveals a band with potential, a band that can lead the way and build a strong name in Greece and abroad. Musically now the guys offer us death metal with an intense thrash metal hue and a great dose of enchanting and melancholic melodies. So, we could say that they are musically close to the melodic death/thrash metal branch, but at the same time they try to make the difference by incorporating in their sound various other elements. So, the death metal riffs are interwoven with either some classic heavy metal tunes or progresisve structures. The vocals are very nice with a thrash scent and approach and the use of the acoustic guitar gives more depth to the final result. I think these guys have a bright future, so try contacting them. Here’s a very interesting demo from Greece. The band Echidna was formed in 2004 and though their biography is very poor (they only mention the participation in live shows) their debut demo is very interesting. First of all the package was very good with nice artwork (including the lyrics) - always a positive thing when a demo falls in my hands.

About the music. Their style is a mixture of death / thrash metal with many technical parts and several references in oriental themes (mostly on the guitar riffs). The vocals brought in mind Tom from Sodom, always of course with the usual Greek accent - but that’s not a problem for me. The songs are quite lengthy in duration and it is more than obvious (especially after listening the demo several times) that the band has really given time upon the compositions. There are no boring moments in this CD, without becoming catchy or something relevant to that the band seems quite focused never letting the compositions stretch beyond the point of boredom.

One special notice goes to the excellent bass lines (something not so common on the genre). A better production would have definitely raised this to a whole different level but nether less the hard work of the band is striking from distance. I hope to hear more material from them soon.

Αμαν τι ήταν αυτό ακόμα προσπαθώ να συνέλθω από την ακρόαση του ...this suffering.

Ανελέητο thrash με αρκετές death επιρροές με φοβερές ταχύτητες και riff που σκοτώνουν, για τα τύμπανα τι να πούμε αν τα είχαν οι Αμερικάνοι στο Βιετνάμ θα είχαν κερδίσει σίγουρα. Τα φωνητικά θυμίζουν Kreator(λίγο πιο βαριά) και πραγματικά είναι φανταστικά, δένουν απόλυτα με την μουσική.

Όλα τα κομμάτια είναι απλά φοβερά δεν υπάρχει λόγος να γίνει παρουσίαση για το καθένα γιατί θα γράψω για όλα τα ίδια λόγια.

Να είστε καλά ρε παιδιά καιρό είχα να ταρακουνηθώ έτσι.

This is the first demo of this band that plays Heavy/Thrash metal with rough vocals. What won my interest from the very beginning of the listening of this material were the freshness and the guts that unfolded from it. ECHIDNA manage to sound like a band that stands for many years on the scene although they are a new coming band. The combination of melody and strength is very nice, and keeps your interest high throughout all the listening of this work without being boring or monotony. The only thing that I believe needs a little improvement is the sound, which although it isn't bad at all, doesn't seem to have the strength that it is required and that will help the final result to sound even better. Anyway here we are talking about a very nice work from a band that seems to has many things to offer to the scene and really deserves your full attention and respect. Hebben we hier te maken met de Griekse Kreator? Deze promo van de Griekse band Echidna blaast me bijna achterover van de stoel! De muziek is te omschrijven als trash/death metal met melodische death metal en progressieve invloeden. De oorsprong van de band ligt in het jaar 2004 toen drummer Giannis, gitarist Nikos P. en gitarist Panos besloten Echidna op te richten. Nadat in 2005 zanger Theo (?) en bassist Nikos M. de band completeerden werd er een begin gemaakt met het schrijven van eigen werk. Met als resultaat hun eerste demo getiteld “…This suffering “. En het moet gezegd, wat een fantastisch strak stukje vakwerk hebben ze daarmee afgeleverd! Als hen dit geen platencontract oplevert weet ik het ook niet meer. En dat voor een band die eigenlijk pas vorig jaar in de definitieve samenstelling bij elkaar is gekomen. Het feit dat ze op 22 oktober in Thessaloniki in het voorprogramma staan van Tankard zegt ook genoeg. En dan te bedenken dat deze gasten nog piepjong zijn.
Het schijfje opent met het geweldige “Downforce” Prima opener om meteen het visite kaartje af te geven! Heerlijke gitaarriffs in de stijl van Iced Earth en de stem van Theo klinkt als een bandschuurmachine ! De ritme-sectie is dik in orde en plamuurt echt elk gaatje dicht. “Balance preservation “ neemt het stokje over en draaft als een bezetene door richting “Depleted” Tijdens dit intro komt toch weer sterk Iced Earth op in mijn gedachten totdat een fenomenale double bass het tempo opvoert naar brute snelheid ! Ben benieuwd hoe dik de kettingen van de pedalen van Giannis zijn.
Helaas bestaat dit schijfje maar uit 4 tracks. Het afsluitende “…This suffering” begint zeer vredig op het enge af. Maar gelukkig is dat van korte duur en worden de diverse instrumenten daarna weer zwaar op proef gesteld. Dit smaakt naar meer.
Ook vooral hulde voor de super productie! Gezien het feit dat er maar 4 nummers te bespreken zijn zal ik in mijn waardering enige terughoudendheid moeten betrachten. Ben wel super benieuwd wanneer ze hun eerste full-length CD gaan produceren! Ik hou jullie op de hoogte! Normaal gesproken had ik deze Griekse goden een dikke 9 gegeven! Maar gezien het feit dat er helaas maar 4 nummers op staan zal ik het houden op een dikke 8!

Τέλειο όνομα και πολύ καλό εξώφυλλο. Εντάξει σίγουρα δεν κοιτάμε το περιτύλιγμα μα το περιεχόμενο και τα παραπάνω απλά σημειώθηκαν ως θτεικά σχόλια για μια συνολικά πολύ προσεγμένη δουλειά της μπάντας από τη Θεσσαλονίκη. Οι Echidna στο παρθενικό τους Demo CD παρουσιάζουν τέσσερα κομμάτια καλοδουλεμένου Thrash Metal με σαφείς αναφορές στη Γερμανική σχολή. Η μπάντα φροντίζει να εμπλουτίζει τα κομμάτια της με αναφορές τόσο σε κάποια μοντέρνα riff -το ρεφρέν του Downforce για παράδειγμα-,όσο και με τεχνικά περάσματα αλλά και με σκοτεινές μελωδίες στοιχεία που κάνουν το Thrash Metal τους ενδιαφέρον, πολυποικίλο και σε καμία περίπτωση απλοϊκό. Η λεπτομέρεια είναι που κάνει τη διαφορά και αυτό η μπάντα δείχνει να το γνωρίζει καλά -προς όφελός της βέβαια-. Το Balance Preservation είναι σημείο αναφοράς για το πόσο πραγματικά μπροστά βρίσκονται οι Θεσσαλονικείς σε αντίληψη μιας και η επιθετικότητα, η μελωδία και το σκοτεινό απόκοσμο feeling συνυπάρχουν σε εύστοχους συνδυασμούς στο κομμάτι. Στο Depleted η μπάντα έχει όρεξη για μικρά τεχνικά Thrashing όργια, ενώ το ομώνυμο κομμάτι με την παραπλανητική μελωδική εισαγωγή του δίνει τον επίλογο αποδεικνύοντας ότι η μπάντα έχει αφομοιώσει για τα καλά το πόσο πικρόχολοι ήταν ανέκαθεν οι Kreator -σχήμα που αποτελεί βασική επιρροή των Echidna κυρίως στα φωνητικά-. Η παραγωγή του Demo είναι υποδειγματική και όσο για το εξώφυλλο τα είπαμε από την αρχή. Echidna: Θρυλικό πλάσμα της ελληνικής μυθολογίας, σύζυγος του Τυφώνα. Ήταν μισή γυναίκα και μισή οχιά και γέννησε πολλά μυθολογικά τέρατα (Λιοντάρι της Νεμέας, Κέρβερος, Χίμαιρα, Σφίγγα, Ύδρα, Μέδουσα και πολλά άλλα. Αυτό το όνομα επέλεξαν ο Νίκος (κιθάρα), Γιάννης (drums) και Πάνος (κιθάρα) όταν τον Οκτώβρη του 2004 αποφάσισαν να δημιουργήσουν ένα συγκρότημα. Σε αυτό προστίθενται οι Νίκος (μπάσο) και Τεό (φωνητικά). Δύο χρόνια μετά την ίδρυση τους κυκλοφορούν το πρώτο τους demo με τίτλο “This Suffering”.

Το demo αυτό αποτελείται από 4 κομμάτια στα οποία οι Echidna στηρίζονται κατά κύριο λόγο στο τεχνικό death metal, ενώ οι επιρροές τους από μελωδικό και progressive death, thrash αλλά και από ανατολίτικες κλίμακες κάθε άλλο παρά μπορούν να αγνοηθούν. Όπως καταλάβατε, τα φωνητικά δεν είναι καθαρά. Η χροιά του Τεό κινείται στα όρια μεταξύ του Mille Petrozza και του Chuck Schuldiner. Κατά 80% τα κομμάτια κινούνται σε υψηλές ταχύτητες και η δίκαση έχει την τιμητική της. Η τεχνική κατάρτιση των μουσικών της μπάντας είναι εμφανέστατη ενώ εντύπωση προκαλεί η έντονη παρουσία του μπάσου με αρκετά τεχνικά περάσματα σε κομμάτια όπως το “Depleted”. Επίσης η παραγωγή του “This Suffering” αποτελεί ένα από τα θετικά του demo, αφού κάλλιστα θα μπορούσε να είχε κυκλοφορήσει σαν κανονικός δίσκος. Η εξαιρετική δουλειά που έγινε από τα παιδιά σε αυτόν τον τομέα είναι αξιοπρόσεκτη, καθώς μπορείς να ακούσεις καθαρά το κάθε όργανο ξεχωριστά. Ο τομέας της παραγωγής, που κατά την γνώμη μου είναι ο πιο ευαίσθητος για τα νέα συγκροτήματα, πρέπει γενικά να προσεχτεί ιδιαίτερα ώστε να μην χαντακώνονται οι συνθέσεις από άθλιες παραγωγές, αλλά ευτυχώς οι Echidna ξεπέρασαν αυτόν τον σκόπελο με μεγάλη επιτυχία.

Συνολικά πρόκειται για μια παραπάνω από αξιόλογη προσπάθεια από τους Echidna. Η συνέχεια ελπίζω να είναι ανάλογη, έτσι ώστε στο μέλλον να μπορέσουν ίσως να καλύψουν κατά κάποιο τρόπο το κενό που άφησαν οι Death στο χώρο. Sigh… yet another band playing Melodic Death Metal. Well, at least this ECHIDNA (A half monster/half woman creature in Greek mythology) add some Thrash-y bits to keep things a little more lively and rocking. Not to say that we have an original band here but it at least is pretty enjoyable.

The core of their music consists of solid Death/Thrash riffs provided by Nikos and Panos on which the band expands with melodic lead playing and small and not too ambiguous Progressive parts that add a nice touch. I specifically like the adventurous bass loops that bassist Nikos Metaxas plays, they add a bit of melody as well as maintain a good rhythm. Sometimes they get downright Neo-Classical, like in “Depleted”. Add to that a few good fast solos and an overall pretty atmospheric riff section and you’ve got some pretty decent Melo-Death/Thrash.

Vocally there are no surprises, just your standard not too extreme Death metal vocals. The best thing about ECHIDNA though is something that they don’t have: keyboards, which is often the reason why modern Melo-Death bores me - instead, the Greeks improvise with some great guitar and bass melodies and subtle drum breaks that are infinitely more interesting then the tried old keys/synth loops. Μετά από πολύυυυ καιρό (1+ χρόνο, λόγω κωλοστρατού βεβαίως βεβαίως) ξεκινάμε σιγά σιγα τα live πάλι... Σιγά σιγά όμως γιατί ο τραγουδιάρης ακόμα μέσα είναι!
