As a Greek band, Need are one of my weaknesses. I always admired Greek bands that were on the same level as other bands abroad and lack of money combined with poor production were their greatest enemies (not to mention how the fans face them...). But this time, this band is a fearless Metal machine, ready to take over the world.

Their story starts somewhere in Athens, Greece. When George Tzavaras and Chris Gialsides met Antony Hadjikostadis and George Diamantides, they decided to turn this side-project into their main band. After the recordings of "Avoidinme", the band parted ways and George Tzavaras now continues Need with the current lineup, featuring members of Wheelrunner, Furor and Vulnus.

Despite their previous release (a very good Demo), this time they seem to have changed their musical direction. From Progressive Metal to more Stoner and Nu Metal forms, keeping a few of their past elements. Sometimes you can say that their sound is very close to the also Greek Wastefall as well as Psycho Choke. The tracks are very well structured and the bass is playing a very important role in this band, filling the songs with melodic scales. Great harmonies and melodic choruses make the listener put this CD in his CD player many times; catchy tunes make the difference, dude! Something that impressed me was the backing vocals. Well-worked gang vox that make you sing along. What can I say about the singer??? He’s screaming his ass out! His more melodic approach of the vocals reminded me of Layne Staley from Alice In Chains. The recordings took place in Greece and they’re nice indeed! Something strange for a country that never had to offer much when it came to studios. This band is talented for sure and has managed to gain a respectable level of reputation. If they keep this course, they’ll find their way to a good and professional career.

Be sure to check this band out. You will certainly come across them in the future with a full-length release. I just hope they’ll decide how they want to sound like. Their current genre fits them well enough. So, train your ears while I present you... Need!!!

Όταν είχα ακούσει την προηγούμενη δουλειά των Need με τίτλο Avoidinme, αναρωτιόμουν αν θα συνέχιζαν σε αυτό το στυλ (μείξη New, Progressive και στοιχεία από ηλεκτρονική μουσική). Στο Promo 2006 οι Need κατασταλάζουν απ’ ότι φαίνεται στο New metal, το οποίο αποδίδουν μάλιστα πολύ καλά, όμως τα στοιχεία ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής (πλήκτρα) έχουν εξαφανιστεί. Το promo αποτελείται από τέσσερα τραγούδια και χαρακτηριστικό του είναι οι συναισθηματικές μεταπτώσεις που δοκιμάζει ο ακροατής ακούγοντάς το. Αν και τα πλήκτρα απουσιάζουν, οι μελωδίες κάνουν την εμφάνισή τους εκεί όπου πρέπει και η παραγωγή είναι καλή για τα δεδομένα της ελληνικής σκηνής. Μουσικά οι Need αποδίδουν πολύ καλά, ενώ ο τραγουδιστής έχει βρει το κατάλληλο συναίσθημα. Αν ψάξει κάποιος για επιρροές μάλλον θα αναγνωρίσει τους Stone Sour σε κάποια σημεία, ενώ στα πιο ήρεμα σημεία τους (π. χ. στο τέλος του τραγουδιού Sea of lost faces) μου θύμισαν λίγο My dying Bride. Πολύ καλή δουλειά που δεν πρέπει να μείνει απαρατήρητη. Τους ευχόμαστε καλή συνέχεια

You may remember the recent review to Need's first demo CD, which drew deservedly our attention. This time we have the pleasure to review four new tracks of this hopeful -and slightly transformed- band. First of all there are some changes in the line-up that inevitably changed the sound of the band. But the changes are not constrained only in the line-up, but there are also in the sound of the band itself. The new tracks adapt the new aggress-progress-ive formula, with referrals to late Fates Warning. There are a lot of aggressive riffs, on which the songs stand, but also there is a plentiful of technical skills, exhibited wisely in songs like "Torn". Newcomer John Vogiantzis reinforces this aggressiveness, but nevertheless he is gives a brilliant and expressive display on vocals.

The main drawback is that most of the four songs follow the same structure, i.e. mid-tempo with a break somewhere in the mid-section of the track, and this let me with an incomplete image of the band's new musical direction; plus that I miss the particular lyricism that the band demonstrated in "avoidinme". However the production is very improved and it seems that this is a field that the band worked hard on, while the cover is very close to the promo's atmosphere.

"avoidinme" created many expectations from the band and this promo manages to retain our expectations in high levels. We are just a few steps away from their first official CD and personally I am waiting anxiously to listen to what one of the most hopeful bands of the Greek progressive scene has to state. Λοιπόν, μιλάμε για γαμάτη δουλειά. Άνετα έχει θέση στα αγαπημένα μου γκρικ ντέμα. Φοβερές συνθέσεις με ωραίες δομές κ αλλαγές κιε πάνω απ'όλα χαρακτήρα.
Το groove παρών καθ'όλη τη διάρκεια, είτε είναι σε κλάσικ stoner φάση, είτε σε πιο αμερικανο-βλαχο-downειδές, είτε σε pantero-ειδές, με ανάλογα φωνητικά (δε εννοώ γκαρίσματα ε) και ωραίο ήχο.

Συγκεκριμένα για τον ήχο, ενώ είναι οκέι (για δεδομένα ντέμο-πρόμο, τελειότητα) θα τον προτιμούσα διαφορετικό. Λίγη "βρωμιά" στις κιθάρες, λίγο μπάσο παραπάνω θα ταίριαζε καλύτερα... εκτός βέβαια αν το θέλατε εσείς κ βγήκε πιο digital. Σαν ήχο Mudvayne ένα πράμα, που τώρα που το σκέφτομαι, θυμίζετε σε αρκετά σημεία κιαυτούς.

Όλα αυτά τα ωραία τα περιμένεις ήδη, έχοντας δει το artwork που είναι προσεγμένο κιόπως πρέπει.

Αυτά, γαμάτε. Μπράβο.

Είναι ωραίο όταν βλέπεις μπάντες που σου κινούν το ενδιαφέρον με το πρώτο τους demo, να επιβεβαιώνουν με τον καλύτερο τρόπο τις δυνατότητες που έχουν αφήσει να διαφανούν. Έτσι το νέο demo των Need έρχεται να διαδεχτεί επάξια το "Avoidinme" και πιστοποιεί πως η μπάντα αξίζει της προσοχής μας. Τα τέσσερα κομμάτια, δείγμα του ντεμπούτου album που επακολουθεί, είναι ένα μείγμα διαφορετικών επιρροών που η μπάντα καταφέρνει να τις συνδυάσει με πολύ ικανό τρόπο και να δημιουργεί ήχους που σε αφήνουν μ' ένα χαμόγελο ικανοποίησης στο στόμα σου. Εκεί που ακούς ένα ρυθμό που σε πάει στους Kuyss, ξεπετάγεται ένα Pantero-ειδές riff ή ένα Tool μέρος που σου μεταβάλλει εντελώς την διάθεση αλλά και σε κάνει να συνειδητοποιήσεις για μία ακόμη φορά με τι καλό συγκρότημα έχεις μπλέξει.
Άσος στο Μανίκι: Η πολύ καλή γνώση για το πώς χρησιμοποιείς τις όποιες επιρροές προς όφελος της μουσικής που δημιουργείς.
Προσοχή Παίδες: Μην χαλαρώσετε, έχετε κάνει θετικά πρώτα βήματα αλλά τώρα θέλει ακόμα σκληρότερη προσπάθεια.
Έχει τα Προσόντα για Champions League; Περιμένω από τώρα ν' ακούσω το album που ετοιμάζουν.

At last! The debut album of this incredible band is finally released! From the moment I listened to and reviewed some stuff they have released I was eager to come across their first full-length work. And here I am reviewing this album. I have reviewed everything they have released and fuck yeah they are one of the greatest Greek Metal bands! Read and enjoy...

I consider writing bio stuff about this band again is a bit meaningless. The only thing that has to be said is the replacement of Nikonas Tzifas with the new drum smasher, Pete, and I should also add that Kostas Theodorou left the band. The serious and (in my humble opinion) incredible work Need have done until now, made Burning Star offer them a contract they could not refuse. So, after signing the contract, Need are here releasing their first full-length work. Let’s see what they have to say...

The same sound as their previous work, "Promo 2006". Much Stoner elements, Progressive breaks, Nu Metal style catchy riffs and their more than obvious love towards Metallica perfectly describe what these guys produce. You got it right. We are talking about a band that plays modern Metal that cannot be categorized. Don’t try to put any tag on their music; you will just get tired of trying! Raw production that makes the Stoner catchy feeling be more obvious, low tuned guitars and smashing drum parts that make you want to headbang until the CD is over! While listening to the album, I also sensed some influences from A Perfect Circle. Riffs inspired by the way that the legendary Dimebag (R.I.P.) shown and Sepultura style vocals combined with their modern approach of music form a great mixture of old and new (not Nu) styles of Metal. These guys do not put limits on their musical orientations and that’s what makes them special and different. Even though you can easily understand which their influences are, you can easily see that this band has its own identity. Their sound is unique and that’s what is missing a lot in today’s Metal scene.

There is nothing more I have to add. You just have to buy this album and see for yourselves that these guys are here to stay. Congratulations to this hard working band. I wish them only the best!

Need are probably a unique band for the facts of Greece. Their label categorizes them as modern metal, which is correct but a bit abstract and unfair, because this release hides a lot of surprises. The band carries influences from groups like PANTERA, METALLICA (the classic ones), NEVERMORE, DISTURBED and GODSMACK (the modern touch). Their album has some great grooves and lots of intense moments. The big surprise, though, of this album is the track “The Wisdom Machine”, that starts as a metal thunder and turns into a progressive metal masterpiece with lots of fusion parts that even DREAM THEATER would envy. For sure Need is not the band that you will listen easily to, but if you pay attention to their debut album, they will definitely reward you. This is a band that came out of nowhere and I believe that they have a lot to offer and nothing to envy from the other groups that come from abroad. The open minded listeners must buy it!!!

In my mind Need are the "bad boys" of the new Greek progressive metal scene. They are the heavier of all bands and the ones that realize the term progressive metal in a wide and modern way. You might be doubtful if they are really prog metal or something else, but this doubt surely documents that they are a band that you can hardly classify. In one of my previous reviews, I told about the aggress-progress-ive metal that recently witness here and there. For me Need fit in this category, but guess what… they are more than this too.

So what exactly are Need? They play technical and powerful metal with a modern (say it nu, it doesn't matter, since they have little to do with the representatives of this silly genre) approach. Need walk in a raw land and in their hand have a map with Nevermore, Pantera, Tool and Fates Warning on the four points of the navigation axes. To extend this metaphor the land they walk is a desert, as they exploit very wisely the groovy attribute of stoner rock. After descriptions like this I ask my self (and you): "Confused"? Sometimes yes, but this time things are plain enough. Need are a band that writes intelligent aggressive music, destined to be played live. It is much evident that the music in "The Widsom Machine" breaks necks when played live. Although the production is at a good level, still they have to try more to improve in this section. Not because you won't enjoy the album, but if they want to make the difference, then they must do something better.

I turn back and see a band with a great evolution in a small period of time. I do not think that this fact is enough to reward them, but the overall result of "The Wisdom Machine" leaves me no other choice. If you do not want to lose something that might be turn to great in the next years, then this release is strongly recommended.

Need - The Wisdom MachineRalph: Greece is not known for its great contributions to metal and so I was a little sceptic – without wanting it - when I got the debut album 'The Wisdom Machine' by Need. I was so far off! It appears that this band has it going and it's a surprising, unique band. What's unique? Well, that's the hard part because this band is very hard to tag anyway. Linkin Park meets stoner I'd say. The raw stoner sound and heavy nu metal riffing is an interesting combination for sure. You can easily define the band as progressive as well because there's a lot going on during the ten tracks. Tempo and mood changes are many and you are caught of guard many times as listener. The only good advise I can give is to go and check it out, judge for yourself.

Need For Candlemass !!!



Candlemass in Need for support ? Not any more! «Ο Κύβος Ερρίφθη» και οι NEED είναι το group που σε Θεσσαλονίκη και Αθήνα θα ανοίγει την βραδιά για τους doom heroes!

Ξεκίνησαν το 2003 από τον Ravaya (κιθάρα) και μέσα στο 2004 ηχογράφησαν το πρώτο τους promo cd “avoidinme”. Μετά από αρκετές αλλαγές η σύνθεση σταθεροποιήθηκε στις αρχές του 2006 και την άνοιξη της ίδιας χρονιάς ηχογράφησαν το πρώτο τους album. Το “The Wisdom Machine” κυκλοφόρησε τον περασμένο Νοέμβριο από την Burning Star Records λαμβάνοντας πολύ καλές κριτικές από εγχώρια και διεθνή έντυπα και sites.

Τραγούδια τους έχουν συμπεριληφεί σε διάφορες συλλογές μεταξύ των οποίων και αυτή του ProgPower Festival UK. Μέχρι σήμερα οι NEED έχουν εμφανιστεί πολλές φορές ζωντανά στην Αθήνα και σε άλλες πόλεις της Ελλάδας ενώ τον Απρίλη του 2007 ολοκλήρωσαν μια μίνι περιοδεία με εμφανίσεις στην Αγγλία και τη Δανία.

Αυτή τη στιγμή δουλέυουν πάνω στον δεύτερο δίσκο τους ενώ ετοιμάζουν και μια ευρωπαική περιοδεία για το χειμώνα σε συνεργασία με το γερμανικό management Redlion Music.
