LED ZEPPELIN IV - Stairway To Heaven
Τα κριτήριά μου, για το αν κάποιο τραγούδι μου αρέσει ή όχι, δεν μπορούν να εξηγηθούν με τη λογική, για μένα είναι θέμα χαϊδέματος αυτιών και αγγίγματος ψυχής. Έτσι, ποτέ δεν μπόρεσα να έχω επιχειρήματα για την αποδοχή ή απόρριψη κάποιου μουσικού ακούσματος. Αυτό που έπαιζε τον μεγαλύτερο ρόλο για μένα ήταν το πρώτο άκουσμα, αν αυτό μου άρεσε από την αρχή, έμπαινε στη λίστα με τα αγαπημένα μου, αν όχι, τότε ποτέ δεν θα το αγαπούσα, όσες φορές και να το άκουγα και όση πλύση εγκεφάλου και να γινόταν από κάθε κατεύθυνση.
Πρώτα λοιπόν με άγγιζε η μουσική και πολύ αργότερα έψαχνα το στίχο. Κάποια καλά τραγούδια είχαν από μέτριο έως ανόητο στίχο, η γνώμη μου όμως δεν άλλαζε για τη μουσική. Εάν το υπέροχο άκουσμα συνοδευόταν από εξίσου υπέροχους στίχους, τότε το αποτέλεσμα ήταν εκπληκτικό.
Κάτι τέτοιο συνέβη με το κλασσικό album Led Zeppelin IV. Οι Zeps, από τα καλύτερα groups του προηγούμενου αιώνα και ίσως το καλύτερο της δεκαετίας του 70, συνδύαζαν καλό ήχο και καλό στίχο. Το album Led Zeppelin IV είναι από τα καλύτερα που έχω ακούσει, με διαχρονικά κομμάτια, όπως τα Black Dog, Rock and Roll, Stairway to Heaven, και λιγότερο γνωστά στους πολλούς τα τραγούδια The battle of evermore, Misty Mountain Hop, Four Sticks, Going to California, When the Levee breaks.
Θέλω να εστιάσω στο Stairway To Heaven. Μια υπέροχη μπαλάντα στην αρχή, που στην πορεία εξελίσσεται σε hard rock άκουσμα. Όσο για τους στίχους, πιστεύω πως αποτελούν τις βασικές αρχές του new age. Κάποιοι ανεγκέφαλοι το χαρακτήρισαν σατανικό (!), είναι μάλλον μακράν νυχτωμένοι.

This pivotal heavy rock quartet was formed in October 1968 by British guitarist Jimmy Page (b. James Patrick Page, 9 January 1944, Heston, Middlesex, England) following the demise of his former band, the Yardbirds. John Paul Jones (b. John Baldwin, 3 June 1946, Sidcup, Kent, England; bass, keyboards), a respected arranger and session musician, replaced original member Chris Dreja, but hopes to incorporate vocalist Terry Reid floundered on a contractual impasse. The singer unselfishly recommended Robert Plant (b. 20 August 1948, West Bromwich, West Midlands, England), then frontman of struggling Midlands act Hobbstweedle, who in turn introduced drummer John Bonham (b. 31 May 1948, Birmingham, England, d. 25 September 1980), when first choice B.J. Wilson opted to remain with Procol Harum. The quartet gelled immediately and having completed outstanding commitments under the name "New Yardbirds", became Led Zeppelin following a quip by the Who's Keith Moon, who, when assessing their prospects, remarked that they would probably "go down like a lead Zeppelin".
They were guided and managed by Peter Grant (b. 5 April 1935, London, England, d. 21 November 1995). He was best known as the heavyweight manager of all UK rock groups, both in size and stature. Armed with a prestigious contract with Atlantic Records, the group toured the USA supporting Vanilla Fudge prior to the release of their explosive debut, Led Zeppelin, which included several exceptional original songs, including "Good Times, Bad Times", "Communication Breakdown", "Dazed And Confused' - a hangover from the Yardbirds" era - and skilled interpretations of R&B standards "How Many More Times?" and "You Shook Me". The set vied with Jeff Beck's Truth as the definitive statement of English heavy blues/rock, but Page's meticulous production showed a greater grasp of basic pop dynamics, resulting in a clarity redolent of 50s rock 'n' roll. His staggering dexterity was matched by Plant's expressive, beseeching voice, a combination that flourished on Led Zeppelin II.
The group was already a headline act, drawing sell-out crowds across the USA, when this propulsive collection confirmed an almost peerless position. The introductory track, "Whole Lotta Love", a thinly veiled rewrite of Willie Dixon's "You Need Love", has since become a classic, while "Livin' Lovin' Maid (She's Just A Woman)" and "Moby Dick", Bonham's exhibition piece, were a staple part of the quartet's early repertoire. Elsewhere, "Thank You" and "What Is And What Should Never Be" revealed a greater subtlety, a factor emphasized more fully on Led Zeppelin III. Preparation for this set had been undertaken at Bron-Y-Aur cottage in Snowdonia (immortalized in "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp"), and a resultant pastoral atmosphere permeated the acoustic-based selections "That's The Way" and "Tangerine". "The Immigrant Song" and "Gallows Pole" reasserted the group's traditional fire and the album's release confirmed Led Zeppelin's position as one of the world's leading attractions. In concert, Plant's sexuality and Adonis-like persona provided the perfect foil to Page's more mercurial character, yet both individuals took full command of the stage, the guitarist's versatility matched by his singer's unfettered roar.
Confirmation of the group's ever-burgeoning strengths appeared on Led Zeppelin IV, also known as "Four Symbols", the "Runes Album" or "Zoso", in deference to the fact that the set bore no official title. It included "Stairway To Heaven", a group tour de force. Arguably the definitive heavy-rock song, it continues to win polls, and the memorable introduction remains every guitar novice's first hurdle. The approbation granted this ambitious piece initially obscured other tracks, but the energetic "When The Levee Breaks" is now also lauded as a masterpiece, particularly for Bonham's drumming. "Black Dog" and "Rock 'N' Roll" saw Zeppelin at their immediate best, while "The Battle Of Evermore" was marked by a vocal contribution from Sandy Denny. IV was certified as having sold 16 million copies in the USA by March 1996. However, the effusive praise this album generated was notably more muted for Houses Of The Holy. Critics queried its musically diverse selection - the set embraced folk ballads, reggae and soul - yet when the accustomed power was unleashed, notably on "No Quarter", the effect was inspiring. A concurrent US tour broke all previous attendance records, the proceeds from which helped to finance an in-concert film, issued in 1976 as The Song Remains The Same, and the formation of the group's own record label, Swan Song.
Bad Company, the Pretty Things and Maggie Bell were also signed to the company, which served to provide Led Zeppelin with total creative freedom. Physical Graffiti, a double set, gave full rein to the quartet's diverse interests, with material ranging from compulsive hard rock ("Custard Pie" and "Sick Again") to pseudo-mystical experimentation ("Kashmir"). The irrepressible "Trampled Under Foot" joined an ever-growing lexicon of peerless performances, while "In My Time Of Dying" showed an undiminished grasp of progressive blues. Sell-out appearances in the UK followed the release, but rehearsals for a projected world tour were abandoned in August 1975 when Plant sustained multiple injuries in a car crash. A new album was prepared during his period of convalescence, although problems over artwork delayed its release. Advance orders alone assured Presence platinum status, yet the set was regarded as a disappointment and UK sales were noticeably weaker. The 10-minute maelstrom "Achilles Last Stand" was indeed a remarkable performance, but the remaining tracks were competent rather than fiery and lacked the accustomed sense of grandeur. In 1977 Led Zeppelin began its rescheduled US tour, but on 26 July news reached Robert Plant that his six-year-old son, Karac, had died of a viral infection. The remaining dates were cancelled amid speculation that the group would break up.
They remained largely inactive for over a year, but late in 1978 they flew to Abba's Polar recording complex in Stockholm. Although lacking the definition of earlier work, In Through The Out Door was a strong collection on which John Paul Jones emerged as the unifying factor. Two concerts at Britain's Knebworth Festival were the prelude to a short European tour on which the group unveiled a stripped-down act, inspired, in part, by the punk explosion. Rehearsals were then undertaken for another US tour, but in September 1980, Bonham was found dead following a lengthy drinking bout. On 4 December, Swan Song announced that the group had officially retired, although a collection of archive material, Coda, was subsequently issued.
Jones went on to become a successful producer, notably with the Mission, while Plant embarked on a highly successful solo career, launched with Pictures At Eleven. Page scored the movie Death Wish 2 and, after a brief reunion with Plant and the Honeydrippers project in 1984, he inaugurated the short-lived Firm with Paul Rodgers. He then formed the Jimmy Page Band with John Bonham's son, Jason, who in turn drummed with Led Zeppelin on their appearance at Atlantic Records' 25th Anniversary Concert in 1988. Despite renewed interest in the group's career, particularly in the wake of the retrospective Remasters, entreaties to make this a permanent reunion were resisted. However, in 1994 Page and Plant went two-thirds of the way to a re-formation with their ironically titled Unledded project, though John Paul Jones was conspicuous by his absence (for want of an invitation). The duo cemented the relationship with an album of new Page And Plant material in 1998. Although their commercial success is unquestionable, Led Zeppelin are now rightly recognized as one of the most influential bands of the rock era and their catalogue continues to provide inspiration to successive generations of musicians.

"How Many More Times" -- This is one of three songs in which Page employs the bow. There is a brief tribute/reference/inside joke during the long instrumental section where the band plays part of the Page-written "Beck's Bolero."
"Dazed And Confused" -- The Yardbirds performed this with different lyrics as "I'm Confused". The guitar solo following the bow section is Page's solo from the Yardbirds' "Think About It." The second of the three songs on which Page employs the bow.
"Black Mountain Side" -- Viram Jasani plays tabla.
"Whole Lotta Love" -- The "middle section" was created with the theremin, some recorded drums, vocal gymnastics from Plant (heavily filtered through various effects), and a lot of random knob-twisting by Page and Eddie Kramer in the studio.
"Out On The Tiles" -- The title is British slang for "a night on the town." It is Page that can be heard saying "stop!" in this song, reminding himself to stop playing.
"Hats Off To (Roy) Harper" -- Roy Harper is an English folk musician who toured (though didn't perform) with Zeppelin and with whom Page and other Zeppelin members have worked, recorded, and toured. He is probably best known for his lead vocal on Pink Floyd's "Have A Cigar."
"Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" -- "Bron-Y-Aur" is a misspelling of Bron-Yr-Aur.
"Friends" -- The synth drone at the end covers a production mistake (the original intro to "Celebration Day" was erased.) The strings in the song are real.
"Since I've Been Loving You" -- Bonham's bass drum pedal squeaks during much of this song (it's especially annoying during the intro).
"Tangerine" -- This was a Page composition left over from the Yardbirds days.
"Black Dog" -- The title came from a black dog that wandered in and out of the studio during the _IV_ sessions.
"The Battle Of Evermore" -- Sandy Denny (of Fairport Convention) on vocals. Her parts were handled live by John Paul Jones.
"Misty Mountain Hop" -- Yes, there is a mistake in this song, (in the line that begins "There you sit..."), though the band apparently felt the rest of the take was too good to replace.
"Four Sticks" -- Bonham used 4 sticks while recording this song (two in each hand) hence the title.
"When The Levee Breaks" -- The drum sound was produced by placing Bonham's kit in a stone stairwell, and hanging a microphone from the stairs a few flights up.
"D'yer Mak'er" -- pronounced like Jamaica.
"The Rain Song" -- The "strings" on this song are actually a Mellotron.
"The Ocean" -- There is a phone ringing at about 1:37 in. Don't ask why. The count-off at the beginning is Bonham: "We've done four already, but now we're steady, and then they went: one, two, three, four."
"Kashmir" -- There are keyboards on this song, but there are also real strings and horns.
"Black Country Woman" -- The sound from an overhead plane was not removed from the intro, thanks to Plant's audible "No, leave it in."
"Bron-Yr-Aur" -- A cabin where Zeppelin often retreated for composition and relaxation. It means "The Golden Breast". The unusually "thick" guitar sound is a combination of an open tuning and clever use of backward echo.
"Boogie With Stu" -- Stu is Ian Stewart, the Stones resident pianist.
"In The Evening" -- The third song in which Page employs the bow. The unusual noises in the guitar solo are caused by the springs of a fully-depressed whammy bar. The intro is based on Page's work for the Lucifer Rising soundtrack.
"All My Love" -- The strings and horn sounds are all synths.
"I Can't Quit You Baby" -- The live version on Coda is from the Royal Albert Hall performance (widely available on bootleg video)--_not_ the rehearsal as is sometimes claimed.
On 24 September 1980, Bonham left Worcestershire to meet with the group at Bray studios for rehearsals for the upcoming US tour. He consumed a steady diet of quadruple screwdrivers along the way. After the rehearsals, the band retreated to Page's Windsor house, where Bonham continued to drink and then passed out. At around 1:45pm on 25 September, sound technician and Plant roadie Benji Le Fevre checked on Bonham to find out why he hadn't stirred. There was no pulse. A doctor arrived and pronounced Bonham dead at the scene. A subsequent coroner's inquest revealed the cause of death to be accidental -- Bonham choked on his own vomit after drinking the equivalent of 40 measures of vodka. Alcohol poisoning may have been involved, but was not positively determined. On 4 December 1980, Led Zeppelin issued the following statement: "We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect we have for his family, together with the sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were."

Αγαπητέ cloud, θα πρέπει να καταλάβεις πως κάποια άτομα δεν είναι πρόβατα, που άγονται και φέρονται από κάποιους δήθεν ειδήμονες.
Ο καθένας μας έχει άποψη, για το τι του αρέσει περισσότερο και τι λιγότερο.
Προσωπικά πιστεύω, πως σ'όλες αυτές τις ομάδες συζήτησης του διδικτύου θα έπρεπε να γίνεται μια ανταλλαγή απόψεων, με σεβασμό στη γνώμη των άλλων, και όχι καυγάδες.

Πάμε τώρα στο άλμπουμ Presence, που κυκλοφόρησε στις 31 Μαρτίου 1976.
Αρκετά καλό θα έλεγα, όχι όμως από τα καλύτερά τους.
Ξεχωρίζω ως καλύτερα τραγούδια τα Nobody's Fault But Mine και βέβαια το Achilles' Last Stand.
Με αφορμή το τελευταίο, θα σχολιάσω κι'εγώ το medley (The Rover, Achilles' Last Stand, The Song Remains The Same) των Dream Theater.
Οι Theater τα πάνε μια χαρά στις διασκευές, όμως η φωνή του LaBrie δεν είναι ισάξια με την φωνή του Plant, του Gillan, του Dickinson, ούτε καν του Hetfield.
Καλύτερα να ακούσετε τα πρωτότυπα, αν και δεν διαφωνώ καθόλου με την τιμή που κάνουν οι Dream Theater στους μεγάλους κλασικούς.

Δεν διαφωνώ πως είναι καλός τραγουδιστής ο LaBrie στα studio albums των Dream Theater.
Η διαφωνία μου είναι, πως ενώ οι 4 μουσικοί παίζουν άρτια τα τραγούδια και τα albums των μεγάλων κλασικών, η φωνή του LaBrie κάπου χάνει και έτσι χαλάει το σύνολο.

Τον Ιούλιο του 1973 οι Led Zepellin δίνουν συναυλία στο Madison Square Garden και η συναυλία αυτή ηχογραφείται.
Πολύ αργότερα, στις 22 Οκτωβρίου 1976, κυκλοφορεί το διπλό live album The Song Remains the Same, με τα τραγούδια αυτής της συναυλίας, καθώς και η κινηματογραφική ταινία με τον ίδιο τίτλο.
Την ταινία την είδα στα φοιτητικά μου χρόνια, ήταν καταπληκτική, η αίσθηση ήταν πως ήμασταν και εμείς παρόντες σ'αυτή τη συναυλία, μια και τους Led Zepellin δεν τους είδαμε ποτέ live στην Ελλάδα (ούτε καν στα μετέπειτα live του Robert Plant δεν κατάφερα να πάω :cry: )
Το Stairway To Heaven είναι πάντα υπέροχο, εδώ ακούγεται ένας στίχος που δεν υπάρχει στην εκτέλεση του στούντιο, "does anybody remember laughter?"
Την ατάκα αυτή την συναντάμε και στην ταινία Almost Famous, :) , όλο εδώ καταλήγω.
Ξαναείδα πρόσφατα αυτή τη ταινία και έκανα καταμέτρηση των τραγουδιών των Led Zepellin.
5 τραγούδια τους ακούγονται συνολικά εδώ, τα περισσότερα από κάθε άλλο καλλιτέχνη, και συγκεκριμένα:

Νάτο πάλι το χρονικό λαθάκι, το τραγούδι Bron-Yr-Aur είναι από το Physical Graffiti του 1975, ενώ η ταινία αναφέρεται στο 1973.
Ίσως το μπέρδεψαν με το τραγούδι Bron-Y-Aur Stomp από το Led Zepellin III του 1970.
Πάντως το τέλος της ταινίας, όπου ακούγεται το Tangerine, με άφησε με ένα τεράστιο χαμόγελο... :)

Το τελευταίο ουσιαστικά album των Led Zepellin, In Through the Out Door, κυκλοφορεί στις 15 Αυγούστου 1979.
Αυτό το album μου αρέσει περισσότερο από τα albums της τελευταίας περιόδου των Led Zepellin, έχει υπέροχα τραγούδια, αλλά και ήταν δώρο ενός πολύ αγαπημένου μου συμφοιτητή και φίλου, με τον οποίο διατηρούμε την φιλία μας ακόμα και μετά από 27 χρόνια :!: (ποιος να το φανταζόταν τότε...)
Πολύ καλή αρχή του album με το In The Evening, καλή συνέχεια με το South Bound Saurez, στη δεύτερη πλευρά ξεκινάμε με Carouselambra και All My Love, 7 όμορφα τραγούδια σε γενικές γραμμές.
Και επειδή χθες πικραθήκαμε με ένα διαδικτυακό φιλαράκι, επιτρέψτε μου να του αφιερώσω ένα αγαπημένο μου τραγούδι, ίσως να είναι καλή αφορμή να ψάξει καλύτερα τους Led Zepellin.

Οι Led Zepellin έπαψαν να υπάρχουν σαν συγκρότημα, μετά το In Through the Out Door, χωρίς όμως να ανακοινώσουν την διάλυσή τους.

Στις 19 Νοεμβρίου 1982 κυκλοφορεί το Coda, ένα άλμπουμ με παλιότερα ακυκλοφόρητα τραγούδια τους.

Όλα μα όλα τα άλμπουμς των ζέπελιν είναι θεϊκά. (Το coda δεν είναι άλμπουμ!!!)
Προσωπικό αγαπημένο είναι το III, με το Physical Graffiti να ακολουθεί σε απόσταση αναπνοής.
Ακόμα και τα δύο τελευταία (Presence, In Through The Out Door) είναι κορυφαία και έχουν κομμάτια σαν το In The Evening και το Achilles Last Stand, που δεν επιδέχονται κριτικής.
Τι να λέμε τώρα, απλά ΤΕΡΑΣΤΙΟΙ και αξεπεραστοι.

Εκτός κι αν νομίζεις ότι θα μπορούσε να γίνει το πέρασμα κατευθείαν από τον έλβις και τους rolling stones.

Ναι αγόρι μου που οι mc5 έπαιζαν grindcore και καμία μουσική σχέση με led δηλαδή!! Γενικά προσπάθησε να καταλάβεις ότι το ένα πράγμα φέρνει το άλλο και είναι αστείο να βγαίνεις εν έτει 2007 να μειώνεις τους led και το hard rock λες να είναι η τροπή του rock & roll που πρόδωσε τις βασικές του ιδέες η ξερωγω. Άλλη φάση, ξεχωριστά παρακλάδια, πες δε γουστάρεις και σκάσε.

Επίσης, τα λουλούδια στα μαλλιά και τα κεχριμπαρένια χαϊμαλιά καλά σε γαμάνε. για καμπάνες και 22λεπτα σολα, δεν το συζητάμε καν :hippy: Αγαπηθείτε (ή αγαμηθείτε εναλλακτικά), καλό κάνει.

Ρε hcpunksonacid το καταλάβαμε ότι δεν σου αρέσουν. Οκ φτάνει. Κι εμένα δε μου αρέσουν οι crustcorιες αλλά δε μπήκα να αρχίσω να ειρωνεύομαι όλα αυτά τα συγκροτήματα και δίσκους που λες εκεί (κυρίως γιατί δεν τα ξέρω, όσο φαντάζομαι κι εσυ τα εδώ συζητούμενα παρά έχεις μια γενική ιδέα). Δεν έχει νόημα να το συνεχίσεις..

Τεσπα, απλά εξοργίζομαι. Αυτό που είπε πριν ο νοτ_σεηβντ βασικά. Ενδιαφέροντα ακούσμτα υπάρχουν και στο πανκ και στους ζεπ και στους ΣαννΟ))) και στους κινγκ κριμσον. Αν κάποιος δεν μπορεί να τα δει ας κάνει το άκουσμά του υπόθετο.
Επίσης το γαμημένο αλτ+σιφτ στο κιμπορντ μου θέλει 5 - αππροξ 6 πατήματα τα οποία βαριέμαι να κάνω
